NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The Brown women's soccer team (5-1-2) defeated Central Connecticut State (0-4-1) 4-0 in convincing fashion.
"I'm really proud of our team's performance today at CCSU," said Messing Family Head Coach Kia McNeill. "Going on the road and coming away with a 4–0 win, and a clean sheet is no small feat. It was great to see Corine and Hasti find the back of the net with those scrappy goals in the box, and Naya has been outstanding all season with her set-piece execution. I'm happy her hard work was rewarded with her two goals today. Even with the result, I still think we have room to grow, and can be more clinical in the final third during the run of play. That's a scary thought after scoring four goals, but we have to continue to push towards our true potential to be in top form for Ivy play."
The Bears were attacking early, as junior midfielder Joy Okonye recorded three shots in the first 23 minutes. Brown recorded eight total shots in the first 33 minutes.
In the 37th minute, the Bears finally broke through as senior defender Naya Cardoza deflected a corner kick from Brooke Birtwistle into the net. It was the second straight game in which Birtwistle found Cardoza on a set-piece opportunity for a goal.
The floodgates opened after that as junior defender Hasti Gholami scored her first career goal in the 42ndminute.
Junior forward Corine Gregory followed up with her first career goal just three minutes later, after receiving the ball in the box from Angelina Vargas. Gregory turned and tucked the ball into the lower corner with a sweet finish.
Brown remained steady in the second half, recording 21 shots in the game. Cardoza scored a second goal in the 53rd minute with a header on the back post on a corner kick delivered by Joy Okonye.
Okonye leads the Ivy League in assists after recording her fourth of the season. Naya Cardoza tied the Ivy League lead with her fourth goal of the year. The Bears will play one more non-conference matchup before Ivy League play begins.
The Bears will make the short trip to Providence College on Wednesday to take on the Friars at 5 p.m.
