PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's soccer team (4-1-2) battled against Hofstra (3-1-1) to a 1-1 draw on Thursday night.
It was a tightly contested first half, with the Bears recording five shots to the Pride's six.
Senior goalkeeper Bella Schopp made two saves against a couple of Hofstra attacks in the first half. Both teams played to a 0-0 draw at the half.
The Bears started the second half strong defensively, only allowing one shot in the first 25 minutes.
The first goal of the night came in the 71st minute from the Pride. Graduate forward Mathilde Braithwaite sent the ball to the low right corner for the score.
The Bears retaliated in the 86th minute when senior defender Naya Cardoza scored her second goal of the season. Sophomore midfielder Brooke Birtwistle sent a free kick into the box perfectly placed for Cardoza to make the play. Cardoza then headed the ball past Hofstra's Lilly Bailey to tie it up at one.
Brown closed out the contest outshooting Hofstra 14-10.
"The team showed a lot of fight there in the end to go down a goal and be able to come back in the last five minutes of the game," said Messing Family Head Coach Kia McNeill. "Our team hasn't really faced a lot of adversity until today, and I think we showed fight and resilience, and we're going to need that going forward."
The Bears will travel to Central Connecticut State on Sunday for a 2 p.m. match with the Blue Devils.
