WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Brown Bears women's soccer program began the 2025 season on Friday night with a victory over the University of New Haven Chargers by a score of 3-0.
The Bears came out firing, as their 14th shot of the night found the back of the net. Joy Okonye scored in the 33rd minute with a free kick that found the bottom corner.
Brown earned 10 corners and registered 11 shots on goal in the first half.
Ayla Sahin scored quickly in the second half to make it 2-0. Okonye later added another free kick goal to make it 3-0.
"I'm incredibly proud of the team and the way we came out to start the season. A 3-0 win on the road is a great result, and credit to Joy Okonye for stepping up with two fantastic goals," said Messing Family Head Coach Kia McNeill. "What's exciting is that we've only been together for two weeks, and this performance already shows the tone we're setting for the year. It's always good to start with a win, and our focus now is to keep building and honing in on our potential each game."
In total, the Bears outshot New Haven 39-3, with 18 shots on goal. Bella Schopp made one save, while Gurleen Toor made two saves.
