PRINCETON, N.J. – Behind a complete game shutout from Alexis Guevara, Brown softball (31-15) took down No. 1 seed Princeton (26-17), 4-0 in the first round of the Ivy League Tournament at C.L. Paul '94 Field on Thursday (May 8).
Guevara (18-7) went seven innings, scattering six hits and struck out three batters without allowing a walk. The senior, who was named First Team All-Ivy, allowed just four runners to reach scoring position but the Bears' defense shut down any threat from the Tigers.
Brown finished with just five hits from five different Bears but also drew four walks, including a bases loaded walk drawn by Alyssa Villarde to score the first run of the game in the second. Brown drew three walks surrounding a single by Abby Bettencourt to break the scoreless tie.
Princeton picked up a two-out double but a ground out to short ended the inning. The Bears responded in the fourth manufacturing a run after a leadoff single by Cameron Zytkewicz Ray. A passed ball on the first pitch of the next at bat moved Zytkewicz Ray to second and Bettencourt then bunted Zytkewicz Ray to third. Amanda Deng doubled Brown's lead with a sacrifice fly to right.
Back-to-back singles started the bottom of the fourth before a flyout to foul territory in right moved the runners to second and third. On a missed bunt attempt in the next at bat, Laurel Moody threw beind the runner at third to Villarde, who applied the tag for the second out. Guevara forced a flyout to center in the next at bat to end the inning.
Princeton got a runner on in the fifth with a one-out single but a pop up in the infield followed. Moody then threw out the runner trying to steal second to end the inning.
Moody then stepped to the plate to lead off the sixth giving the Ivy League Player of the Year her 59th hit, breaking the Brown single season hits record. The Bears weren't able to get a run across in the sixth but did get insurance runs in the seventh.
Maggie Foxx started Brown's rally with a one-out walk. Villarde followed that up with a single up the middle before Jasmine Hsiao doubled to the wall in left center to score Brown's third run. Elli Thompson then grounded to short but the throw home was late, allowing Villarde to make it 4-0.
