PRINCETON, N.J. – Brown softball used two late runs to move on to the Ivy League Championship game with a 2-1 win over Columbia at C.L. Paul '94 Field in Princeton on Friday (May 9).
The win is Brown's 32nd of the season, tying the program record for wins in a season.
Brown finished with seven hits as Abby Bettnecourt went 3-for-3 at the plate and Alyssa Villarde picked up two hits.
Alexis Guevara (19-7) threw another complete game, allowing one earned run on six hits and striking out six batters. Guevara's 19th win ties her for second all-time in wins in a single season. The senior's fourth strikeout of the night gave her 400 career strikeouts.
Bettencourt's first hit of the evening came on a double to the wall in left center but a hard line drive resulted in a double play to end the inning.
In the third, Villarde doubled off the wall in left and moved to third with two outs on a wild pitch but a groundout kept the Bears off the board.
Brown finally broke through in the fifth as Bettencourt singled to start the inning. On a pickoff throw to first, the throw was off target and Bettencourt moved up 60 feet. With two outs and runners on first and second, Jasmine Hsiao singled through the left side to score Leah Carey, who had walked earlier in the inning.
Laurel Moody walked in the top of the sixth to leadoff the inning and after a groundout Brown had a runner in scoring position in Maya Choksi, who ran for Moody. Cameron Zytkewicz Ray singled to center, and it looked like Choksi had scored but Zytkewicz Ray was called for interference and ruled out, placing Choksi back at third. Bettencourt delivered with a single to left to score Choksi and make it 2-0.
Guevara's scoreless streak in the Ivy Tournament ended at 12 innings as Columbia got back in the game with a solo home run to cut Brown's lead to one. After a pop up, Columbia's Cami Neal reached on an error but was caught in a run down trying to advance to second for the second out. After a single, Guevara got a fly out to end the inning.
Villarde doubled for a second time in the top of the seventh but Brown wasn't able to get another run across.
In the bottom of the inning, Guevara sat the Lions down 1-2-3. The inning started with a foul out to Villarde who made a great catch against the dugout fence. Guevara then got a fly out to left before striking out the final batter of the game.
