Softball Begins NCAA Regional Play Against No. 12 Seed Texas Tech on Friday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball begins play at the Lubbock Regional in the NCAA Softball Tournament on Friday (May 16) as the Bears will take on the host and No. 12 seed Texas Tech Red Raiders at 5:30 p.m. ET at Rocky Johnson Field. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.

THE FIRST PITCH
• Brown won its first Ivy League Tournament in program history with a 4-1 win over Princeton to earn its second trip to the NCAA Tournament and first since 1997. Brown won all three of its games in the Ivy League Tournament, becoming the first team to do so in the three-year history of the event.
• The Bears will play in the Lubbock Regional and will face off against host Texas Tech, who is the 12 seed in the tournament, on Friday (May 16) with first pitch set for 5:30 p.m. ET. Mississippi State and Washington are the two other teams in the Lubbock Regional.
• Alexis Guevara was named Ivy League Tournament Most Outstanding Player after winning all three games and posting an 0.67 ERA in 21 innings. Guevara struck out 12 batters and did not issue a walk. With her win in the championship game, Guevara became the second Bear to ever record 20 wins in a season. The record for wins in a season is 24, set by Christy Trexler back in 1990.
• This will be the second all-time meeting between Brown and Texas Tech. The first meeting came back in 1997 when the Bears and Red Raiders met in the Rebel Games in Florida with Texas Tech winning 11-1.
SCOUTING TEXAS TECH
• Texas Tech comes into the regional with a 45-12 overall record and a 20-4 mark in Big 12 play. The Red Raiders cruised through the Big 12 tournament without allowing a run in their three games.
• NiJaree Canady was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and Gerry Glasco was named Big 12 Coach of the Year, both in the first years at Texas Tech. Canady finished the season with an NCAA-best 0.81 ERA and had 263 strikeouts to just 35 walks in 181.0 innings. She finished the season with a 26-5 record.
• On offense, Raegan Jennings leads Tech with a .397 average and nine batters are hitting over .300 on the season. Three different Red Raiders have a team-best eight home runs and Lauren Allred is tops in RBI with 45.
SHUTTING THE BATS DOWN
• The nine shutouts are the most for a Brown pitching staff since the 1996 season when that staff also finished the year with nine.
EARNING THE HONORS
• Brown has taken home seven Ivy League weekly honors this season.
• Alexis Guevara has earned five Ivy League Pitcher of the Week honors, being awarded the honors on March 10, 17, April 7, April 16 and April 29.
• Laurel Moody has won Player of the Week honors twice (March 10 & 31).
• Amanda Deng took home Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors on March 31.
THE BIG 3-0
• The Bears 33 wins tied the program record for wins in a season with the 1991 season.
• Brown has a winning overall record for the first season since 1996 (24-14).
QUICK START
• Brown started the season 2-0 for the first time since 2010 as the Bears earned a wins over Youngstown State and Winthrop.
• The Bears followed that up with a 7-3 start, the best 10-game start for the squad since the 2016 season.
• The win against Youngstown State was the first for Brown's head coach Mary Holt-Kelsch, who took over the program in August.
BRINGING IN THE RUNS
• Brown has scored in double-digits seven times this season.
• The last time Brown scored double-digit runs in more than five games was back in 1993 when the Bears accomplished the feat nine times.
SETTING RECORDS
• On top of the individual records and team records set in the sidebar to the left, Brown has set or is on the verge set even more records in Holt-Kelsch's first season.
• Laurel Moody set the single season hit record with with her 59th hit of the season in the Ivy League Tournament opener against Princeton. Moody set the walk record (29) for a single season earlier this year. The senior also sits one run tie of fifth all-time in program history (35).
• As a team, Brown set the program record for RBI in a season with 190, the Bears sit at 201
• Brown set the single season record for runs scored with 238, breaking the record in the Ivy League Championship game. The Bears 339 hits this season is also a single season program record.
• The Bears are one home run shy of tying the program record with 32 home runs.
THE HOLT-KELSCH EFFECT
• In her first season at the helm of the Bears, Mary Holt-Kelsch has led Brown to its first Ivy Tournament championship and first 30-win season since 1992.
• The Bears have also made the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1997.
• Brown's 13 Ivy wins are the most in program history by three victories.
• With her 23rd win of the season, Holt-Kelsch became the winningest first-year head coach in Brown program history.
ALL-IVY HONORS
• Laurel Moody was unanimously named Ivy League Player of the Year after winning the Ivy League Triple Crown at the plate. Moody was the fifth Player of the Year in Brown program history and the first since 2012.
• Alexis Guevara joined Moody with First Team All-Ivy honors.
• Amanda Deng was named Second Team All-Ivy and Jasmine Hsiao and Kaicee Klus took home All-Ivy Honorable Mention honors.
LIKE MOTHER, LIKE DAUGHTER
• Abby Bettencourt, a first-year from Peabody, Mass., will be playing in the NCAA Tournament just as her mother did in Brown's first NCAA Tournament appearance back in 1997.
• Brown has met Texas Tech one time in program history, the second game of Brown's season back in 1997.
