Softball Takes Down Cornell With More Late-Game Heroics

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball (17-10, 5-4 Ivy) earned a win 3-2 over Cornell (12-10, 4-4 Ivy) to win the series against the Big Red as Laurel Moody delivered yet another game-winner for the Bears on Saturday (April 5).
Alexis Guevara (8-5) earned another win, throwing a complete game, allowing just one earned run, scattering six hits and finding her way out of multiple jams. Guevara also struck out seven batters, moving into second place all-time in program history for career strikeouts with 339.
Eight different Bears finished with a hit in the game as Brown broke through against Cornell starter Kyrie Denny (6-7) after Denny shut down Brown's offense in the first game.
Guevara found trouble in the second as Cornell loaded the bases with two outs before Guevara stuck out the next batter to end the inning. In the third, Cornell again loaded the bases, this time with one out. The Big Red got a run across on an error but Guevara got the next two outs to limit the damage.
The Bears finally broke through in the fifth as Amanda Deng led off the inning with a double. After a groundout, Maggie Foxx tripled down the right field line for the second-straight game, this time scoring Deng to tie the game. Guevara then stepped to the plate and put the Bears in the lead with a sacrifice fly to score Foxx.
Two doubles in the sixth for Cornell tied the game. The Big Red had a chance to take the lead on a flare into center field but Vanessa Alexander made a spectacular diving catch to end the inning.
Moody stepped to the plate to lead off the sixth inning, and with a full count, drove the next pitch over the scoreboard in left field to give Brown a 3-2 lead. Moody's 11th home run of the season now moves her into to second place all-time for home runs in a single season Brown history.
Guevara issued a two-out walk in the seventh but shut the door with a groundout to Moody to end the game.
