Softball Sweeps Harvard in Saturday Doubleheader

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Brown softball (24-11, 9-5 Ivy) swept a doubleheader at Harvard (19-10, 8-6 Ivy) with 8-2 and 11-6 wins at Harvard on Saturday (April 19).
The Bears finished with double-figure hits in both games against the Crimson and now have 10 -plus hits in four-straight games for the first time since April 2-10, 2016.
GAME 1: Brown 8, Harvard 2
The Bears hammered out 14 hits as Brown broke a 21-game losing streak at Harvard with an 8-2 win in game one of the doubleheader. Laurel Moody collected another three-hit game with Kaicee Klus, Alexis Guevara, Abby Bettencourt and Alyssa Villarde each picking up two hits.
Guevara, who drove in two runs, picked up her 12th win of the season, a new career-high and the most by a Bear since 2012. Guevara threw a complete game, scattering six hits and two walks, only giving up two earned runs and striking out three batters.
Guevara got out of a jam in the first inning with runners on second and third with one out and that allowed Brown to break the scoreless tie in the third. A one-out double by Klus and a walk to Moody was followed by a single down the right field line by Guevara to bring home Klus to make it 1-0. Cameron Zytkewicz Ray followed with a shot to right center to bring home both Moody and Guevara, giving Brown a 3-0 lead.
Harvard scored two in the bottom of the inning off a triple with one out but Guevara stranded the tying run at third after getting a groundout and foul out.
Leah Carey started the fourth with a single. With two outs, Moody singled to keep the inning going and Guevara helped herself out again with another single to score Carey.
With one out in the fifth, Bettencourt singled before Villarde doubled Brown's lead with a home run to the opposite field. After the second out, the inning continued as Jasmine Hsiao singled to left. Klus hit a ground ball to short but an error allowed Klus to reach. As the ball rolled into right field, Hsiao headed to third and after the throw to third went wide, Hsiao came home for Brown's seventh run. Moody then stepped to the plate and singled down the left field line to score Klus making it 8-2.
Over the next three inning, Guevara allowed just two runners with only one reaching scoring position to close out the game.
GAME 2: Brown 11, Harvard 6
The bats continued to shine in game two for the Bears as Brown completed the sweep against Harvard with an 11-6 win. The Bears finished the game with 11 hits as Klus led the way with three. Guevara and Zytkewicz Ray each had two hits in the game. Three different Bears each had three RBI.
Macy Borowski (9-4) earned the win going five innings and striking out two batters. Guevara finished out the game throwing the final two innings, facing the minimum and striking out one batter.
Harvard struck first, scoring two runs in each of the second and third innings. Brown responded in the top of the fourth scoring six runs.
Three-straight singles by Klus, Moody and Guevara drove in the first run of the inning before Zytkewicz Ray doubled to the wall in right center to cut the deficit to one. After a walk put runners on the corners, Bettencourt singled to tie the game. In a play that featured two more errors from Harvard, Villarde reached as Bettencourt and Deng both scored to put Brown up 6-4.
Brown stuck again in the fifth with more two-out runs. With Guevara and Moody on base, Deng doubled to score both runners and make it 8-4. Bettencourt walked and Villarde doubled to the wall in right field to bring home another two runs and push the lead to 11-4.
Harvard scored two in the bottom of the fifth but the Bears got another run back in the sixth as Moody hit a sacrifice fly to score Hsiao, who started the inning with a walk.
GAME NOTES
Brown will close out the series with Harvard, taking on the Crimson for a single game on Sunday (April 20) beginning at 12:30 p.m.

- This was Brown's first win at Harvard since the 2010 season, breaking a 21-game losing streak.
- This marks the first back-to-back wins at Harvard since the last game of the 2008 season and first game of the 2010 season.
- Brown won its first series against Harvard since the 2018 season.
- This is the first road series win against Harvard since 2004, the last time the Bears have won back-to-back road games at Harvard in the same season.
- Brown has now won three-straight games against Harvard for the first time since 1992-93.
- The Bears have now won 12 of their last 14 games, the first time accomplishing that feat since the 1992 season.
