Keel’s Dominance Leads Baseball to Doubleheader Split

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A dominating complete game performance from junior Christian Keel helped lead the Brown baseball team to a doubleheader split with Dartmouth on Friday afternoon at Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium. After Dartmouth took game one 5-4 in 11 innings, the Bears rebounded with a 4-1 victory in game two, manufacturing all four runs to back up Keel's career day.
Keel went 9.0 innings on a career-high 104 pitches and tied his career-high with six strikeouts, allowing seven hits and one walk. He became Brown's first pitcher to throw at least 9.0 innings in a game since 2017 and it was the Bears' first nine-inning complete game since Heath Mayo against Yale on April 29, 2011.
Junior Mika Petersen had three hits and two walks in the doubleheader. Freshman Alex Benevento added two hits in game one and Gunner Boree delivered two safety squeeze bunts for a pair of RBIs in game two.
The Bears defense also turned five double plays across the two games.
GAME ONE
The Bears were limited to just four hits over 11 innings in game one while committing a season-high six errors.
Petersen came through with a two-out single and DJ Dillehay followed with an RBI double to give Brown the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Santhosh Gottam worked around three early Brown errors to hold the lead through three innings.

Dartmouth tied the score in the fourth inning after a leadoff double and a sac fly. They tacked on two more in the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead following a pair of hits and three walks.
Dartmouth tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning, drawing a pair of walks and an RBI single after two outs to make it 4-1.
After being held hitless from the fourth through seventh innings, Brown plated three runs in the eighth inning to tie the game 4-4. With one on and two outs, Dillehay walked and Christian Butera followed with a single to right field that drove in a run. After a walk by Brandon Chang, Miles Newsome and Mark Henshon were hit by pitches that forced in the runs that tied the game.
Peter Dubie entered from the bullpen for the ninth and worked around a two-out double to strikeout out the side, then set the Big Green down in order in the 10th. In the 11th with a man on second and two out, Dartmouth took the lead on an infield single and a double error to score what proved to be the winning run, taking the lead 5-4.
Danny Will retired all 10 batters he faced out of the Dartmouth bullpen to earn the win, striking out three over a perfect 3.1 innings.
GAME TWO
Keel dominated right from the start in the nightcap, facing the minimum through the first two innings. He got out of the sixth inning after a pair of runners reached base and used double plays to get through the fifth and seventh innings.
With Brown leading 3-0 in the eighth, Dartmouth struck for its only run with a single, double, and sac fly. Keel then retired the side in order in the ninth to secure the win.
Brown manufactured all four of its runs, with the first two coming in the fifth on a safety squeeze by Boree, followed by a double steal with Benevento taking second and Henshon swiping home. Brown padded the lead to 3-0 in the seventh as Boree once again laid down a perfect squeeze down the third base line to score Henshon.
Another PERFECTLY executed squeeze by Boree to plate Henshon with a big insurance run!
