Women’s Lacrosse Opens Ivy League Play With 16-14 Loss at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Brown women's lacrosse team (4-1, 0-1) suffered a 16-14 loss in its Ivy League opener at Cornell (5-1, 1-0) at Schoellkopf Field on Friday evening.
Brown opened the game on a 3-0 run through the first 5:03 of the contest on goals from Leah Caputo, Annie Burton, and Greta Criqui. Trailing 3-0, Cornell closed the first quarter on a 5-0 run and took a 5-3 lead into the second frame.
After two early second quarter goals by Brown, the game was tied at five. Cornell then outscored Brown 4-1 for the remainder of the second quarter, taking a 9-6 lead into the second half.
Cornell outscored Brown 3-2 in the third quarter, Maddie Joyce and Greta Criqui found the back of the net for the Bears, Cornell took a 12-8 lead into the final 15 minutes.
Early in the fourth quarter, Brown cut the Cornell lead in half on goals from Criqui and Sydney Rathjen. Following the two goals, Cornell scored four consecutive goals to take a 16-10 lead with 4:48 remaining in the fourth.
The Bears scored the final four goals of the contest, including a goal from Maddie Joyce that cut the Cornell lead to 16-14 with 1:08 to go in regulation, but it wasn't enough as Brown suffered its first loss of the 2025 season.
Greta Criqui scored a team-high four goals as Sydney Rathjen produced three goals and four assists for the Bears. On the defensive side of the ball, Paige Gillen had three ground balls, five draw controls, and two caused turnovers.
Brown will be back in action on Sunday, Mar. 9 when they travel to Binghamton at 1:00 p.m.
