PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball (14-9, 2-3 Ivy) busted out the bats as the Bears scored 17 runs and hit five home runs in a sweep at Penn (2-22, 0-11 Ivy) in a doubleheader on Saturday (March 29).
GAME 1: Brown 5, Penn 2
Amanda Deng and Laurel Moody each hit two-run home runs as Brown took the first game of the day 5-2 over Penn. Alexis Guevara (6-4) picked up the win for Brown throwing a complete game, allowing two runs with two strikeouts.
Deng finished the game with three of Brown's eight hits, starting her day hitting a two-run home run that scored Cameron Zytkewicz Ray, who had singled in the previous at bat.
The Bears' next run came in the sixth after Deng doubled. Later in the inning, with Deng on third and Maggie Foxx on first, Foxx got caught in a run down on a steal attempt but stayed alive long enough for Deng to score.
With two outs in the seventh, Kaicee Klus singled and Moody hit a two-run home run to left to push Brown's lead to 5-0.
Penn broke through on Guevara with a two-out two-run home run but got a flyout in the next at bat to end the game.
GAME 2: Brown 12, Penn 7
The Bears bats exploded with three home runs and four doubles and Alyssa Villarde posted a career-high four RBI as the Bears powered past Penn 12-7 for the doubleheader sweep.
Brown finished with a season high 16 hits as both Deng and Moody had three-hit games. Jasmine Hsiao, Klus, Abby Bettencourt, and Villarde all finished with two hits. Hsiao had three RBI in the contest.
The Bears got on the board first in the second as Deng singled to lead off the inning and would come across the plate after a two-out single by Lily Berlinger. Brown took advantage of one of Penn's four errors to put a run across in the third to make it 3-1.
In the fourth, the Bears extended the lead with solo home runs from both Hsiao and Moody. Penn responded with three runs but the Bears broke the game open in the fifth.
The inning began with singles by Zytkewicz Ray and Deng before Villarde drove both home with a triple to right center field. After two groundouts, Hsiao hit her second home run of the game, a two-run shot, to make the score 9-4.
Bettencourt doubled to start the sixth and stole third before Zytkewicz Ray walked. Deng followed that with a double to score Bettencourt before Villarde hit a ground-rule double over the right field fence to score two more runs.
Penn added three runs in the bottom of the sixth but the Bears closed the door for the win.
Macy Borowski got the start for the Bears, throwing 3.1 innings and striking out two. Edie Cobb (2-1) picked up the win in relief, throwing 2.0 innings and Abby Bettencourt made her first-career appearance in the circle throwing the final 1.2 innings without allowing a hit and striking out one.
