Burns Hits First-Career Home Run; Softball Falls to Southern Miss and North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Brown softball started its weekend in Jacksonville dropping games to Southern Miss (1-0) and North Florida (13-2, 5 innings) at the University of North Florida on Friday (March 6).
Lilly Burns connected with her first-career home run for the Bears in the loss to the Ospreys in the night cap. Maggie Foxx finished the night with three hits and Reagan Crosthwaite picked up her first collegiate hit.
SOUTHERN MISS 1, BROWN 0
The weekend started with a pitching duel between the Bears and the Golden Eagles as Macy Borowski threw a complete game for Brown. Borowski finished the game allowing one unearned run on five hits while picking up five strikeouts.
Brown finished the game with six hits as Maggie Foxx had three hits for the Bears. Cameron Zytkewicz Ray collected a double.
The Bears had a chance in the third, getting runners to second and third with one out but could not get a run across after a foul out and line out.
Borowski found her way out of trouble early, stranding a runner at third in the first and at second in the second. In the third, Southern Miss had runners on second and third after a one-out double. On a ground ball to Maya Choksi at short, the Bears' junior went home to get the runner and keep the Golden Eagles off the board.
Southern Miss also put a runner on third in the fourth before Borowski picked up a strikeout and flyout to end the inning.
The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth as Southern Miss manufactured the winning tally. With two outs, Borowski hit a batter and when the Golden Eagles stole second, the throw down got into center field allowing the runner to take third. The next batter hit a flare behind second base and beat the throw to first to make it 1-0.
Foxx picked up a two-out single before a strikeout ended the contest.
NORTH FLORIDA 13, BROWN 2 (5 innings)
Brown fell behind early and could not get back into the game with the Ospreys to close out the day. The Bears allowed three runs in both the first and second innings.
In the top of the second, Burns stepped to the plate and crushed a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence to give Brown its first run of the game and the first home run of the season for the Bears.
North Florida took full control of the game putting up six runs in the bottom of the third and added one more in the fourth.
Brown loaded the bases in the top of the fifth and Borowski delivered as a pinch hitter. The junior drove home Maddie Stubenrauch with a sacrifice fly to added Brown's second run but the Bears would not get another run across as the game finished in five innings.
UP NEXT
Brown will make the trip to Jacksonville University on Saturday (March 7) as the Bears will begin the day with another matchup against Southern Miss (1 p.m.) before closing out the night against the host Dolphins (6 p.m.).
