Softball Heads to Jacksonville for Weekend Tournament

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball returns to action playing five games at the UNF/JU Spring Break Challenge, hosted by the University of North Florida and Jacksonville University, this weekend.
The Bears will play two games on Friday (March 6) at North Florida, before heading to Jacksonville University for two games on Saturday (March 7) and one game on Sunday (March 8). The lone game being streamed on ESPN+ this weekend will be Brown's Friday night matchup against North Florida.

THE FIRST PITCH
• Brown returns to play at the UNF/JU Spring Break Challenge as the Bears will play five games over the weekend. Brown will take on Southern Mississippi and Jacksonville twice and will play North Florida once.
• The Bears started the season 1-4 at the River State Classic hosted by Texas State. The lone win for Brown came against Colorado State as the Bears scored three runs in the top of the seventh to win 3-1
• Maya Choksi had the best weekend for Brown in the first weekend of play, collecting a team-high five hits (.500 avg.) and tying with Elli Thompson for a team-best two RBI.
• After finishing with no more than 18 wins since the 2010 season, the Bears tied a program record with 33 victories under first-year head coach Mary Holt-Kelsch. The 13 Ivy League wins were also the most in program history.
LEADING THE BEARS
• Maya Choksi lead the team with a .500 batting average and five hits. Choksi is one of five Bears to have recorded a double in the first weekend of the season.
• Jasmine Hsiao had a double at the plate, giving the senior 32-career doubles. Hsiao is now four doubles away from moving into fifth-place all-time in program history and is 11 doubles away from being the all-time leader at Brown.
• Macy Borowski picked up Brown's lone win in the circle and Edie Cobb leads the team with eight strikeouts in 13.2 innings pitched.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
• Southern Miss is 14-8 on the season and is riding a seven-game win streak entering the weekend. The Golden Eagles beat Alcorn State 5-2 in a midweek matchup on Tuesday night.
• During the seven-game win streak, Southern Miss has scored at least three runs in each game and scored five or more runs in three of those games. The Golden Eagles have also allowed two runs or less in five of those games, including three shutouts.
• Seven players are hitting over .300 for a Southern Miss team that is hitting .308 through 22 games this year. Hannah Christian is tops on the team with a .392 average and 29 hits. Nealy McManus has a team-high 16 RBI. The Golden Eagles are still looking for their first home run of the season but are 26-for-32 in stolen base attempts and have eight triples on the year.
• Southern Miss has had nine players take the circle this season and four players have a sub-2.10 ERA. Kayla Giardina has made a team-high 11 starts and leads the team with six wins, 60.1 innings pitched and 41 strikeouts. Madilyn Graham holds a 1.85 ERA in 22.2 innings pitched.
INSIDE THE SERIES
• This will be the fourth meeting all-time between Brown and Southern Miss. Brown is 0-3 all-time in the series with the last game being a 6-3 loss on March 5, 2023.
SCOUTING THE OSPREY
• North Florida is 19-5 overall and 16-2 on their home field. The Osprey are riding a six-game win streak, winning all five games last weekend during the UNF-JU Classic.
• During last weekend's tournament, North Florida won their five games by a combined score of 34-2. The Osprey through three shutouts, winning those games 10-0, 3-0 and 5-0.
• Six players are hitting over .300 this season, led by Addie Keef's .375 average. Keef is tied with Hallie Langford with a team-best 24 hits. Bella Cimino has three home runs and 19 RBI.
• The Opsrey have been flying on the bases this year, going 50-for-57 in stolen base attempts.
• In the circle, Cameron Ponich leads the team with an 0.81 ERA in 51.2 innings pitched. Ponich is 9-1 on the season with 47 strikeouts.

• Brown is 2-2 all-time against North Florida with the last meeting coming on March 25, 2009. Brown lost that matchup 12-10.
SCOUTING THE DOLPHINS
• Jacksonville is 11-10 on the season and is coming off a loss to No. 10 Florida State the last time they took the field on Wednesday (March 4). Prior to the loss, Jacksonville won four of five games at home in a tournament last weekend.
• Kate Linkletter leads the Dolphins with a .409 average and is tied for the team lead with three home runs and 13 RBI.
• Four other Dolphins are hitting over .300 for the season.
• In the circle, Jacy Harrelson leads the pitching staff with a 2.78 ERA in a team-high 63 innings pitched. She also has a team-high 43 strikeouts.
