Men's Crew Wins Stein Cup at Final Day of Sarasota Invitational
3/29/2025 2:51:00 PM | General, Men's Crew
SARASOTA, Fl - The Brown men's crew team finished the second and final day of competition at the Sarasota Invitational this afternoon. The Bears finished with the third most team points and were able to secure the Stein Cup after defeating Harvard in the Varsity 8 race.
By finishing ahead of Harvard, the Bears move their all-time record to 11-48 when competing for the Stein Cup and pick up their first victory in the series since 2018. The Varsity 8, stroked by David Person and coxed by Elenna Seguin, posted a final time of 05:32.77 and came in second place overall.
After the races, Men's Crew Head Coaching Chair Paul Cooke '89 commented on his team's performance in Sarasota over the weekend and their sweep of the Albert and Stein Cups.
"It's a big day for our team when we can bring back the Stein Cup for the victory over Harvard and the Albert Cup for the victory over Yale," said Cooke. "This race course here at Nathan Benderson Park is the best in the country and it's a real advantage to see some of the top crews in the country and to experience high caliber competition in March. The Varsity raced with an intensity and focus that put them half a length away from the defending national champions, the University of Washington, and ahead of our East Coast counterparts. We have a lot to build on."
The Bears ended with two other podium finishes on the day, coming in third place for the both the Third Varsity 8 (05:47.24) and Fourth Varsity 8 (05:54.97) races. The 3V8 was stroked by Henry Davison and coxed by Jack Mershon, while the 4V8 was stroked by Adam von Bismarck and coxed by Will Bennett.
"Everyone on the team contributed," said Cooke. " Everyone on the team has been working hard and pushing each other. It's exciting to see how engaged they are in building the team. We still have a lot of time until the championship races and a lot of work to do. We'll get back to it on Monday. I'm especially grateful that Christian Albert '91 was present to award the cup named for his family (he rowed at Brown and his father rowed at Yale) to the Brown Varsity."
The Bears next regatta will take place in Redwood Shores, California against California, Stanford, and Syracuse from Apr. 12-13.
