No. 6 Men's Crew Heads to Lake Quinsigamond for 79th Eastern Sprints
5/16/2026 10:25:00 AM | Men's Crew
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - With the regular season portion of their spring schedule complete, No. 6 Brown men's crew prepares for a trip to Worcester, Massachusetts to race in the 79th annual Eastern Sprints regatta.Â
The Bears are no strangers to success at the Sprints, with their Varsity Eight crew winning gold and the Rowe Cup (most team points) eight times each since 1984. The Eastern Sprints also represent the Ivy Championships, making this regatta especially unique. Bruno's V8 has won the Ivy League championship ten times, with their first title coming in 1972 and their most recent championship coming in 2024.Â
Last year's Sprints saw the Bears top boat qualify for the Grand Final and secure a fifth place finish with a time of 5:38.783. Overall, Brown came in seventh place for the Rowe Cup.
This season has shown Brown's ability to compete with the top crews in the nation, firmly upholding their status as a top ten program. With Ivy League wins on Senior Day against No. 7 Dartmouth and April 11 against No. 14 Columbia, the Bears have separated themselves as a true contender for a conference championship on Sunday.
WHAT THE ATHLETES ARE SAYING
Tom Griffin on how this year has unfolded and looking ahead to the Eastern Sprints: "I think this season has been promising. We had a good victory at home against Dartmouth. That was my senior race, last race at home, and we beat them out by roughly one second. So I think right now, there are seven or eight crews who are all around the same speed and it could sort of go any way. We're moving into a new lineup. People are coming back from injury and I think our lineup has a lot of potential. I think the guys are really fit and very motivated. I'm very excited to see what we do at Sprints."
Nick Gaensler on rowing with the Varsity Eight for the first time at the Sprints as a senior: "It's a huge honor to race in the varsity for Brown at the Eastern Sprints. I've raced in every crew, 5V, 4V, 3V, JV and varsity and I have to say, this is the race I'm most excited for. I think we've picked up a lot of speed since we raced Princeton and I'm excited to see what we'll be able to do."Â
Elenna Seguin on the differences between this season and last year: "I think the biggest thing about this year is, so far, we haven't been hit with sickness, which is definitely a positive sign. Regardless, it's kind of been the same sixteen guys moving in and out of the top two boats, and they're all really hard workers, really dedicated, so that's a really consistent factor that's been super reliable. No matter who is in the boat or not, you cna always trust them and that's great. It's just about finding different combinations that work well. We get out there with a good strategy and a good plan, but then you have to be pretty adaptable when you get out on the course."Â
