No. 3 Men's Crew Completes First Day at Redwood Shores Challenge
4/12/2025 5:39:00 PM | Men's Crew
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - Brown men's crew wrapped up day one at the Redwood Shores Challenge after a handful of races against some of the best programs in the country.
"We learned a lot about our team today. Everyone raced hard. Everyone competed," said Men's Crew Head Coaching Chair Paul Cooke '89. "We made some mistakes ad made some adjustments and this group continues to grow and adapt. I'm impressed by the team spirit and the way they all support each other."
"The second varsity had two big victories and their comeback win over Syracuse was special," said Cooke. "The varsity fell to a powerful crew from Stanford in the morning. Stanford put us under pressure and we made mistakes. This afternoon the crew bounced back and rowed with more poise. They really adjusted well and showed improvement, rowing longer and harder than in the morning. The third varsity faced a tough opponent in facing the crews from California and they also made good adjustments and raced better in the afternoon."
The 2V8 picked up a few victories for the Bears, first defeating the eighth ranked Stanford Cardinal by a little under four seconds after posting a final time of 06:11.5. In their second race of the day against the 9th ranked Syracuse Orange, the 2V8 squeaked out the closest win of the season when they won by 0.5 seconds after posting a final time of 06:11.8. Stroked by Isaac Hillicks-Tulip and coxed by Lizzie Mitchell, the 2V8 recorded their second and third wins of the season.
The Varsity 8, after dropping their first race of the day to Stanford, defeated the Syracuse Orange by six seconds after crossing the finish line in 06:07.4. The V8, stroked by David Person and coxed by Elenna Seguin, will enter Day 2 in California with several first place finishes on the season.
"We have this great opportunity to compete against terrific teams," said Cooke. "It's early in the season and we are getting a good understanding of the standard of racing and what it takes to win. I'm grateful that we are here and I was excited to see the crews make so much progress today."
The Bears are back in action on Day 2 of the Redwood Shores Challenge tomorrow morning, with the first race of the day scheduled to start at 10:36 a.m. against the top ranked California Golden Bears. All of the races are being streamed on Overnght.com.
