PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball (12-8, 0-2 Ivy) dropped both games of its Ivy-opening doubleheader to Dartmouth (7-10, 2-0 Ivy) at the Brown softball field on Saturday (March 22).
GAME 1: Dartmouth 5, Brown 3 (8 innings)
Brown's first extra inning game of the season went the way of the visitors as the Bears lost 5-3 in eight innings to Dartmouth to open Ivy League play. A three-run home run by the Big Green was the decider to start the day.
Brown fell behind quickly with Dartmouth scoring a run in the top of the first after a leadoff triple and a single but the Bears immediately responded. After a leadoff walk drawn by Jasmine Hsiao, Laurel Moody drilled a two-run home run to left center to put Brown on top. It was Moody's sixth home run of the season, a new career-high for the senior.
Dartmouth tied the game in the third before the contest turned into the pitchers' dual that was expected between two of the top pitchers in the Ivy League – Brown's Alexis Guevara and Dartmouth's Jensin Hall.
Guevara (6-3) threw the next four innings without giving up a run and finished the game with seven strikeouts and no walks. Hall (4-3) struck out three batters and allowed just six hits and two walks.
Brown's had two chances to break the 2-2 stalemate, loading the bases with two outs in the third and getting runners to second and third with two outs in the fourth but both times Brown could not get the breakthrough run.
To start the eighth inning, Dartmouth tripled and reached on an infield single. On the first pitch of the next at bat, a three-run home run by Alaana Panu put the Big Green ahead. Guevara would get out of the inning without give up another run.
Brown was down to its last out when Cameron Zytkewicz Ray homered off the scoreboard in left field to pull the Bears within two. Zytkewicz Ray's home run was the third of the season for the junior. That was the last the Bears would do as a groundout ended the game.
GAME 2: Dartmouth 5, Brown 1
Brown managed just four hits in game two of the doubleheader with Jasmine Hsiao, Abby Bettencourt, Cameron Zytkewicz Ray and Amanda Deng all tallying base knocks but the Bears dropped the second game of the day to Dartmouth by four runs.
Macy Borowski (4-4) was charged with the loss, going six innings, allowing five runs and picking up three strikeouts. Annie Finch closed out the game with a scoreless seventh inning, allowing just one hit.
Dartmouth picked up one run in the first and two in the second off Macy Borowski to take an early 3-0 lead. After giving up the three runs, Borowski settled down over the next four innings, keeping Dartmouth off the board.
Brown's offense was quiet until the sixth inning when Abby Bettencourt drilled her first-career home run over the left field fence to make the score 3-1 in favor of Dartmouth.
Dartmouth extended its lead with a two-run home run in the seventh, and the Bears weren't able to get any more runs on the board in the bottom of the inning.
