PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball (4-2) picked up a walk-off win over Boston University (8-7) as Laurel Moody hit a home run in bottom of the seventh to give Brown the 8-7 win on Friday afternoon (Feb. 28).
Brown took a 7-5 lead into the seventh inning before Boston University tied the game on a single and a bunt later in the inning. Macy Borowski (2-0), who had entered the game in the sixth inning, managed to strand runners at second and third to send the game into the bottom of the seventh tied up.
Moody led off the inning and two pitches into her at bat, crushed an up-and-in pitch into the batting cages over the left field fence for the winner. Moody's three home runs have matched her total from all of last season.
The Bears finished the game with nine hits as Moody, Leah Carey and Jasmine Hsiao all had two base knocks.
Alexis Guevara got the start for the Bears and went five innings with four runs allowed and five strikeouts. Borowski finished the game with one strikeout.
Brown got things started quickly with singles by Carey, Lily Berlinger and Moody to start the bottom of the first, loading the bases with no outs. Two batters later, Jasmine Hsiao singled, driving in Carey and Berlinger and moving Moody to third. Amanda Deng's sacrifice fly put Brown up 3-0 after one inning.
A Berlinger walk started the third inning and with two outs, Hsiao stepped to the plate and doubled over the center fielder's head put Brown up 4-0.
Guevara had worked around base runners for the first four innings but the Terriers finally broke through in the fifth. With two outs, a grand slam tied the game at four.
Brown responded in the fifth with a two-out hit of their own as Carey singled to start the inning and moved to third after two outs. Abby Bettencourt pinch hit and put one in between short and third to bring home Carey and put Brown back on top.
Boston U knotted things up, taking advantage of an error by the Bears but Brown wasn't done. Deng singled in the sixth and back-to-back walks loaded the bases. Carey's grounder went to third and the throw home got Deng but the throw down to first was wide of the bag and went all the way to the right field corner. Both Cameron Zytkewicz Ray and Borowski came around to score, putting Brown up 7-5 after six.
