Softball Off To Best Start Since 2016 After Doubleheader Sweep of Merrimack

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball (6-2) swept Merrimack (0-5) in a doubleheader on Saturday (March 1). The Bears offense was clicking as Brown won the first game 8-3 and the second 6-0.
GAME 1: Brown 8, Merrimack 3
The Bears picked up two hits from Leah Carey and Cameron Zytkewicz Ray hit her first home run of the season as Brown began its day with a big win over Merrimack.
Zytkewicz Ray, who had two RBI, and was one of six Bears to drive in a run in the game.
Macy Borowski (3-0) earned the win, throwing six innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits and striking out eight batters. Edie Cobb finished off the game, throwing the seventh inning.
Brown struck first in the bottom of the second as Lilly Burns drove in Amanda Deng on an infield single. The Bears doubled their lead in the third when Laurel Moody doubled to the wall in left center to score Lily Berlinger.
Merrimack scored a run in the fourth on a home run but Zytkewicz Ray responded with a blast of her own to center field for a two-run home run, putting Brown up 4-1 after four innings.
In the fifth, Jasmine Hsiao scored Liv Kam on a groundout and Deng hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Elli Thompson, making the lead 6-1.
Thompson drove in Zytkewicz Ray on a fielder's choice but a throwing error allowed Carey to score from second for two more runs.
GAME 2: Brown 6, Merrimack 0
A strong pitching display from Alexis Guevara and a grand slam from Zytkewicz Ray lifted Brown past Merrimack for a win in game two of the doubleheader.
Guevara (2-1) threw six shutout innings for her second win of the season. The senior pitcher scatter five hits and struck out eight batters. Annie Finch threw one inning in relief, allowing one hit and a walk but keeping the Warriors off the scoreboard.
The scoring began for Brown in the second when Vanessa Alexander singled home Zytkewicz Ray. With Alexander caught between first and second an errant throw by Merrimack allowed Thompson to score the Bears second run of the game.
Both teams were held scoreless until the sixth inning when Zytkewicz Ray stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. On the second pitch of the at bat, Zytkewicz Ray ripped a line drive down the left field line and off the foul pole for a grand slam.
UP NEXT
Brown will make the trip to Nashville next weekend for doubleheaders at Lipscomb (March 8) and Belmont (March 9).

- Guevara's 36 strikeouts in five appearances are the most strikeouts by the senior in a five-game stretch in her career.
- The Bears 6-2 start is the best start since 2016 when Brown also went 7-2 through their first nine games.
- Zytkewicz Ray's grand slam was the first grand slam for Brown since April 2, 2026 at Columbia.
