ELON, N.C. – The Brown baseball team dropped its series opener at Elon by a score of 12-2 in eight innings on Friday afternoon. Starting as a quick-moving pitcher's duel, the game remained tied into the bottom of the seventh inning when the Phoenix exploded for 10 runs over the final two innings.
Senior Nathan Brasher picked up his 100th career hit while going 3-for-4 at the plate and scoring both the Bears' runs. Juniors Mika Petersen and DJ Dillehay each went 1-for-4 with an RBI and sophomore Miles Newsome added a hit and reached base twice. On the mound, starter Santhosh Gottam pitched into the seventh inning, going 6.2 innings while allowing three earned runs on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
After a quick first two innings, Brown got on the board in the top of the third, following back-to-back singles by Brasher and Newsome put men at the corners with one out. Petersen then dropped down a bunt up the first base line and Brasher crossed the plate as the throw from the catcher got away for the 1-0 lead.
The lead was short lived as Elon came back with a pair of unearned runs of their own, helped by two defensive miscues in the infield. Gottam induced a 4-6-3 inning-ending double play to escape the jam and keep it a 2-1 game after three.
The Bears drew even in the fifth inning as Brasher led off with his second single of the game, swiped second, then came in to score three batters later when Dillehay laced one through the left side for the RBI single.
Dillehay kept the game tied with a diving catch at third on a ball that was headed for the left field corner to save a run and end the sixth inning.
Elon exploded for four runs, all scoring after two outs, in the bottom of the seventh inning to take control with a 6-2 lead. After a double, walk and passed ball, a ground out to second base plated the go-ahead run. Overall, Elon took advantage of three walks, three hits and a throwing error in the frame, with the big blow coming on a two-out, two-run double that cap the inning.
Elon kept it rolling in the eighth with four walks, a hit by pitch and three singles that plated six more runs to end the game.
The same two teams will square off again for game two of the series on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
