Men's Hockey Drops Conference Game at #14 Quinnipiac
2/22/2025 10:10:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
HAMDEN, Conn. – The 14th-ranked Quinnipiac Bobcats (21-9-2, 15-4-1 ECAC) pulled away from the Brown Bears (13-12-2, 9-10-1 ECAC) in the third period and finished the night with three power play goals to take a 4-0 win Saturday night at M&T Bank Arena.
"It was a great hockey game until the third period, the wheels fell off a little bit," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "It started with a five-minute power play, and we just didn't execute, and not only that, it's a momentum changer for them with multiple chances when we're a man up. It's something we need to fix as we move forward.
"The power play and penalty kill are big parts of hockey, and I thought we failed in both aspects tonight. Quinnipiac is an excellent team, but it's a 1-0 game heading into the third and we're a resilient group. My expectation was that we would have found a way to tie that game up. Special teams let us down."
After a questionable hooking minor against Tanner Hartman, the Bobcats took the lead halfway through the first as Jack Ricketts finished a feed from Chris Pelosi.
The Bears killed off a second Quinnipiac power play later in the first on a tripping minor assessed to Tyler Kopff.
Hartman had a great chance in the final seconds of the frame on a back door feed from Mike Cataldo, but Quinnipiac goalie Dylan Silverstein (21 saves) got his left leg out to make the save.
Kopff had a good chance on net 5:15 into the second and was cross-checked from behind into the Bobcat net, but no call was made on the ice.
On Quinnipiac's third power play of the night, Kopff broke behind the defense for a semi-breakaway but was unable to get a strong shot off with Ricketts in close pursuit.
A scrum ensued late in the period behind Brown's net. After a Brown challenge, Quinnipiac's Anthony Cipollone was assessed a major penalty for facemasking Alex Pineau, giving Brown its first power play of the night.
Lawton Zacher (33 saves) was strong in net once again and tallied 20 saves through the opening 40 minutes of play.
The Brown power play was cut short by a faceoff violation minor against the Bears, and on Quinnipiac's ensuing power play Travis Treloar doubled the lead with 16:28 remaining in the third.
Mason Marcellus found a loose puck in the slot and pushed the score to 3-0 just over a minute later with Pelosi and Aaron Schwartz assisting.
After a Quinnipiac challenge, Charlie Gollob was assessed a major and game misconduct for hitting from behind with 13:01 remaining in the game. Tyler Borgula found the back of the net on the advantage to make it 4-0.
