Men's Hockey Falls to Cornell in ECAC Matchup
2/14/2025 10:11:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Cornell Big Red (10-8-6. 7-6-4 ECAC) tallied three goals in the second period and took a 6-1 win over the Brown Bears (11-11-2, 7-9-1 ECAC) Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.
"It was not a good night for the Brown Bears, I'll take the blame," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "I thought we had a good week of practice, and I thought we understood how you have to play in order to win and we got away from all the things that have made us successful in the last month and a half. Maybe we thought it was going to be easy.
"But all around, I'm not pleased with what I saw out there. I still like the team, it's a good team; but that was not a good team effort tonight. We cut a lot of corners and as such, we got beat by a really good hockey team. It's unacceptable in our home barn in a huge game, it won't happen again."
Matthew Brille had a great chance with 6:30 remaining in the period off a feed from Dean Bauchiero, but Cornell goaltender Ian Shane (17 saves) swallowed it up.
The Big Red took a 1-0 lead with 3:58 remaining in the first as Charlie Major wired a shot past Lawton Zacher (22 saves) off the rush. Jack O'Leary picked up the assist on the night's first goal.
Cornell doubled the lead 25 seconds into the middle frame as Ryan Walsh finished a feed from Sullivan Mack in the slot with Dalton Bancroft adding the secondary assist.
Zacher made a great save on Ondrej Psenicka on a Cornell power play halfway through the period and turned aside another five shots on the Big Red man-advantage to keep the Bears within striking distance.
Walsh and Kyle Penney tallied goals 19 seconds apart late in the period to push Cornell's lead to 4-0.
Tim Rego tallied his fourth of the season 3:08 into the third to push the lead to 5-0.
Nick Traggio cut into Cornell's lead with his first of the season, blasting a slap shot to end Shane's shutout bid. Mike Cataldo picked up the assist on the goal.
Psenicka found the back of the net 39 seconds later to push the score to 6-1.
