Men's Hockey Erases Two-Goal Deficit to Beat #19 Colgate
2/15/2025 10:47:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Ten different Bears found the scoresheet as Brown (12-11-2, 8-9-1 ECAC) erased a two-goal deficit and took a 6-3 conference win over the 19th-ranked Colgate Raiders (15-12-3, 10-6-2 ECAC) on a snowy Saturday night at Meehan Auditorium.
The Bears improve to 8-2-0 over the last 10 games.
"That was a really good win, I thought we started off slow again, and as we progress and play teams such as Colgate and ranked teams at the top of the standings with a lot of good players, we cannot waltz into games like we did again tonight," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94.
"We have to get better that way, but I thought we got a lot better as the game went on and we found a way to score some goals tonight. We need to continue to get better at the start and on the power play.
"We had a lot of good efforts from guys who needed to bounce back following last night. It was a great win against the 19th-ranekd team in the country and it was three really important league points. It's going to be a battle right down to the end, every game is of huge importance."
Colgate opened the scoring as Robby Newton finished a feed from Ryan Sullivan on an odd-man rush following a Brown defensive zone turnover 3:51 into the first period.
After a Brown challenge with no call on the ice, Colgate's Ryan Spinale was assessed a five-minute major and game misconduct for butt ending Brown junior Dean Bauchiero. However, the Bears were unable to capitalize on the power play.
Lawton Zacher (27 saves) kept the Bears within a goal with a breakaway save on Jack Brandt following the Colgate major.
The Raiders doubled the lead with 4:22 remaining as Ben Raymond finished a feed from Sullivan.
Brown got on the board less than a minute later as Alex Pineau forced a Colgate turnover and beat Colgate goaltender Andrew Takacs (13 saves) with a backhand for his seventh goal of the season with 3:48 remaining in the period.
One minute later, Brian Nicholas rifled a rebound off the initial shot from Charlie Gob to tie the game with his 11th goal of the season. Tyler Kopff added the secondary assist on the goal.
Zacher turned aside another breakaway effort in the opening minutes of the second, this one coming from Colgate sophomore Jake Schneider.
After a penalty in the neutral zone, Colgate's Niko Rexine was awarded a penalty shot, but Zacher turned aside Rexine's bid to keep the game tied.
Less than two minutes later, Lynden Grandberg put the Bears ahead with his first goal of the season with 5:23 remaining in the second. He wired a shot from the top of the slot to beat Takacs off the rush with Ryan Shostak picking up the assist.
Zacher robbed Robby Newton of a goal with 4:15 left in the second period, flashing the leather to rip the puck out of the air on the shot from the slot.
Brett Bliss rifled a one-timer off a feed from Charlie Gollob for his first of the season to make it 4-2 Bears with 1:03 remaining in the second.
Newton scored his second of the game short handed 1:32 into the third off a feed from Owen Neuharth to cut the Brown lead to one at 4-3.
Brendan Clark regained Brown's two-goal lead with his sixth of the season 9:13 into the third, wiring a shot off a Bliss feed to beat Colgate goaltender Nick Haas (4 saves), who replaced Takacs to start the third period. Ryan St. Louis added the secondary assist on the goal.
Zacher turned aside another breakaway effort from Raymond with nine minutes remaining in the third to keep the Bears ahead by two.
Gollob added his first goal and third point of the night with 8:06 remaining in the third off a great feed from Nicholas to push the score to 6-3.
