Men's Hockey Settles for Series Split with Yale After Road Loss
11/22/2025 10:23:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale goaltender Jack Stark recorded 40 saves to lead the Yale Bulldogs (3-4-0, 3-3-0 ECAC) to a 3-1 home win and season series split with the Brown Bears (3-6-0, 2-4-0 ECAC) on Saturday at Ingalls Rink.
"It's hard to win on the road, and we were in the box a little too much again tonight," the Class of 1975 Head Coach for Men's Hockey Brendan Whittet '94 said. "We need to be a little more disciplined in what we're doing. We had a little bit of a pushback; it was hard, we didn't have Ryan St. Louis, who is one of the best players in the East. That being said, you expect other guys to step up in his absence. I thought we did some good things; we were just a little inconsistent.
"We're growing, we're doing some good things offensively and we're learning. We need to be better on the road; you have to be dialed in, and you can't beat yourself. I thought we beat ourselves with the goals we gave up tonight.
"We'll get back after it, but higher expectations. It's still early, we're growing, we're learning, I like the team a lot, but my expectation is every game we play, we win."
Penalties were the story in the opening period with four minor penalties assessed to Brown and three assessed to Yale. Both teams finished the period with eight shots on goal.
The Bulldogs found the back of the net 14:18 into the frame on the power play as Zach Wagnon finished a feed from Ronan O'Donnell to beat Brown goaltender Tyler Shea (19 saves). Hughie Hooker picked up the secondary assist on the man-advantage goal.
David Chen doubled the Yale lead 1:43 into the second period. Chen carried the puck into the slot and wired a shot through traffic to beat Shea.
Matthew Cataldo had his second shorthanded breakaway in as many nights 5:52 into the second, but Stark made the stop.
Ben Poitras had a breakaway chance 12 minutes into the period, but Stark kept the Bears off the board.
Brown held a 16-9 shots on goal advantage in the second period.
Charlie Gollob had a great chance off a rush in the slot, but Stark stood tall to make the save.
O'Donnell pushed Yale's lead to three with his first goal and second point of the night with 7:55 remaining in the third.
Brown pulled Shea for the extra attacker with 4:10 remaining in the game and Ivan Zadvernyuk ended the shutout bid on the power play with 45 seconds remaining. Gollob and Brian Nicholas picked up the assists on the goal.
Six penalties were assessed at the conclusion of the game to push the penalty minute total to 26 for Brown and 16 for Yale.
