Men's Hockey Drops Conference Game at #19 Cornell
11/14/2025 10:06:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
ITHACA, N.Y. – The 19th-ranked Cornell Big Red (3-2-0, 2-1-0 ECAC) handed the Brown Bears (1-4-0, 1-2-1 ECAC) a 4-1 loss Friday night at Lynah Rink. Before the game, Cornell honored the life and legacy of Ken Dryden, a 1969 Cornell graduate.
"This is a very tough rink to play in," the Class of 1975 Head Coach for Men's Hockey Brendan Whittet '94 said. "We had a great week of practice, and I thought we had a pretty good first period, but, typical Cornell, they're very good defensively, and they get a lead and then just strangle you.
"In the second period, we got away from what we were doing in the first, which was defending hard, physical play, and playing with a little bit of pace. It's not good enough to come up here and play well in spurts. We need a 60-minute effort, and we need to be better tomorrow.
"It's a long year, and we play to win hockey games. We need the whole team to play for a full 60, not 55 minutes, not two periods. Then we'll have success. I'm always concerned about how you play because I think the results take care of themselves if you play the right way. Hockey is a sport, especially against this team in this barn, where you'd better be ready to battle and get in the fray. It needs to be everyone for 60 minutes, not some guys for two periods."
After a back-and-forth start to the first, Brown goaltender Tyler Shea (21 saves) made a great save against Cornell's Nick DeSantis six minutes into the period to keep the game scoreless.
Zackary Tonelli tipped a point shot from Alex Pineau 14 minutes into the opening period to almost beat Cornell goaltender Alexis Cournoyer (27 saves), but the freshman squeezed his pads to hold the puck.
The Bears nearly broke through again with 4:30 remaining in the first with three consecutive shots during a net-front scramble. Cournoyer turned aside two of the shots and the third hit the post.
The Big Red found the back of the net with 55 seconds remaining in the first on the night's first power play. Caton Ryan picked up the goal with George Fegaras and Gio DiGuilian assisting.
Ivan Zadvernyuk had a late rush in the first period, but his shot in the final second of the period was turned aside.
After successfully killing off Brown's first power play of the night, Cornell doubled the lead as DiGuilian found the rebound off the initial shot from Michael Fisher for his fourth goal of the season.
Brown went back on the power play moments after Cornell's second goal, but Cournoyer made a pair of saves and the Big Red defense blocked another pair to kill off the penalty. The Bears killed off Cornell's second power play of the night late in the second to send the game to the third, trailing 2-0.
Cornell stretched its lead with a pair of goals within a minute as Caton Ryan and Ryan Walsh scored at 5:55 and 6:50 of the third period, respectively.
Brian Nicholas got the Bears on the board with 3:32 remaining in the third period with an unassisted effort. The sophomore carried the puck around the net and wired a quick shot to beat Cournoyer for his second goal of the season.
