Men's Hockey Falls to Colgate in ECAC Matchup
11/15/2025 9:59:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Colgate Raiders (4-7-1, 2-2-0 ECAC) tallied two power play goals in the first period en route to a 4-0 conference win over the Brown Bears (1-5-0, 1-3-0 ECAC) Saturday night at Class of 1965 Arena.
"Hockey is a funny game; we started off that game really well," the Class of 1975 Men's Hockey Head Coach Brendan Whittet '94 said. "We were structured, we were hard, we were heavy, and then we proceeded to take two penalties to put them on a 5-on-3 and turn our momentum in the first period into a 2-0 deficit and we never recovered. We need to generate a little more, we had the puck a lot but we probably missed the net 30 times tonight.
"We were disjointed; we're still trying to find chemistry. I don't want to be repetitive, but we need our young guys to play like veterans. We have a team built primarily of freshmen and sophomores. It's going to take time, but I believe in the guys and we'll get there.
"We have a ton of games left, including one on Wednesday. The positive is we can play a lot better than we did tonight, and we will. This has historically been an extremely hard road trip for most teams, and specifically for the Brown Bears. For some reason we don't play very good hockey in this rink."
The Bears controlled play through the first half of the opening period and had multiple chances on Colgate goaltender Reid Dyck (12 saves). Brown was unable to convert on an early power play following a slashing minor against Ryan Sullivan.
Brown was assessed two minor penalties 13:31 into the first period and Colgate's Simon Labelle tallied his fourth and fifth goals of the season on the ensuing 5-on-3 and 5-on-4 advantage to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead.
Dyck robbed Brian Nicholas of a goal halfway through the second period off a backdoor feed from Ryan St. Louis. Dyck moved to his left to get a leg out for the save.
Both teams had an unsuccessful power play opportunity in a scoreless second period.
Ryan Spinale extended the Colgate lead to three 15:13 into the third period with assists going to Brett Merner and Michael Neumeier.
With Tyler Shea (20 saves) pulled for the extra attacker, Labelle completed the hat trick with 3:07 remaining in the game.
