Men's Hockey Falls in Mayor's Cup Battle Against #5 Providence College
1/7/2025 10:15:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Tyler Shea tallied 40 saves against fifth-ranked Providence College (15-3-2, 5-2-2 HEA) as the visiting Friars outlasted the Brown Bears (4-7-2, 2-5-1 ECAC) and took a 2-0 Mayor's Cup victory Tuesday night in front of nearly 1,800 fans at Meehan Auditorium.
"I thought it was a great college hockey game," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We played the way that we need to play to be successful. I thought we were fast, heavy, and physical. Tip your hat to PC, there's a reason they're 15-3. They're really talented.
"That being said, it's a scoreless game going to the third and they scored two power play goals. I'm incredibly proud of how the team played. The result is not what we want, but we'll be very successful but if we continue to trend and play that way consistently.
"The majority of our season is in front of us, and we played short handed tonight with some top players out. It's a good group; it's a group that at the end we'll be there."
Brown and Providence skated to a scoreless first period with the Bears holding a 17-11 edge in shots on goal. Brett Bliss had a great chance for the Bears late in the period off a feed from Tyler Kopff, but PC goaltender Zachary Borgiel (29 saves) turned the shot aside.
Shea (40 saves) got the start in goal for the Bears and stopped all 11 shots faced in the opening period.
Neither team found the back of the net in the second with the Friars holding the shot advantage in the frame, 15-5.
The Friars struck on the power play 24 seconds into the third as Logan Will blasted a one-timer off a feed from Andrew Centrella. Will Elger picked up the secondary assist on the goal.
PC doubled its lead with a power play goal 13:13 into the third as Hudson Malinoski found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season.
With Shea pulled for the extra attacker, defenseman Ethan Mistry hit the post with a shot and final efforts from the Bears came up short.
