Men's Hockey Falls in Conference Game at Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard Crimson (4-7-2, 3-5-1 ECAC) held on and tallied an empty-net goal to take a 3-1 win over the Brown Bears (4-8-2, 2-6-1 ECAC) Friday night at Bright-Landry Hockey Center.
"We didn't play very smart, we were in the box way too much and took needless penalties where they capitalized," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We need to learn the consistency from game-to-game and period-to-period that it takes to win hockey games.
"I thought we battled hard in the third but it was too late, we took the second period off and you just can't do that at this level. We have to find a way to play 60 minutes."
After the Bears killed off a major penalty, the Crimson took a 1-0 lead at Matthew Morden wired a shot from the circle to beat Brown goaltender Lawton Zacher (26 saves).
Brian Nicholas tied the game on Brown's first power play chance of the night with his sixth goal of the season. The freshman tipped a point shot from Brett Bliss to beat Harvard goaltender Ben Charette (26 saves).
Late in the first, a vicious hit by Justin Solovey against Lynden Grandberg resulted in a scrum but a review determined there was no penalty on Solovey, ultimately leading to 4-on-4 play.
Harvard took a 2-1 lead 7:12 into the second period on the power play as Marek Hejduk found the back of the net with assists going to Solovey and Cam Johnson.
With Brown pressing throughout the period and eventually pulling Zacher for the extra attacker, Harvard's Kyle Aucoin cleared the puck out of the Crimson zone and the carom led to the back of the net to give Harvard a 3-1 victory.
