PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Brown women's basketball team (7-8, 1-1 Ivy) earned their first conference win of the season 77-69 against the Yale Bulldogs (1-14, 0-2 Ivy) on Saturday at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Junior guard Grace Arnolie had herself a career game, posting 35 points against the Bulldogs. Arnolie previously scored 27 points against Rhode Island earlier this season. She also posted seven assists, and went 13-14 in free throws.
Sophomore guard Olivia Young followed Arnolie with 15 points, going 5-6 in three-pointers.
The Bears shot 57% in the paint, 50% in triples, and 80% in free throws.
"I'm super proud of our team. We had a couple of different lineups out there today and I'm sure you all noticed that. The challenge was really to not make any excuses, and that's one of our core values. It's easy to talk about it, and even better to back it up," said Elizabeth F. Turner '98 Coaching Chair for Women's Basketball Monique LeBlanc. "I think we challenged the team to not make excuses for who's available for this game, who's not, what our matchups are, the combinations out there. Let's all know our stuff and be ready to play different positions, and do anything we can to help the team. I thought that they really responded to that challenge and everyone showed up prepared to contribute," LeBlanc said.
A drive to the net from Grace Arnolie would get the Bears on the board first in Saturday afternoon's contest against the Bulldogs. Arnolie found her way to the net twice more, while also posting a three in the first quarter. Aima Ofunrein and Olivia Young also contributed to the Bears' 12 points in the first 10. Ofunrein came in clutch with a block on Yale's Avery Lee as the clock ran out in the first quarter. Yale held a four point edge over Brown after the first.
Young continued her trend of triples, and opened up the second quarter with a three. Arnolie posted nine points in the second quarter. Two driving layups from Arnolie helped Brown take the lead around two minutes into the third quarter. A pair of free throws ahead of the break gave the Bulldogs a one-point advantage over the Bears.
Scoring bounced between teams in the third quarter, with the Bears holding on to a one-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. A triple from Young with just four seconds left in the quarter gave Brown the boost over the Bulldogs.
The Bears stepped up in the fourth quarter posting 28 points. Brown took hold of the lead just 30 seconds into the final 10, and held on until the clock ran out. Saturday afternoon's win marks the Bears' first conference win of the season, evening their Ivy record to 1-1.
