COLUMBUS, O.H. - The Brown women's soccer team dropped a non-conference contest, 2-0,, at No. 20 Ohio State on Sunday afternoon.
"Today was another hard fought battle against a Big Ten team," head coach Kia McNeill said. We made a couple of mistakes early on where we got punished and it put us in a hole early, but other than that I thought we played pretty well. I thought we were on the front foot for the majority of the second half and I was hoping we could chip away at the deficit one goal at a time. We created a ton of chances in the final third, but just didn't put them away."
The Buckeyes opened the scoring in the 5th minute off a header from Ava Bramblett. Following the goal, Nadja Meite had a chance to get her second goal of the season but her shot was stopped by Ohio State goalkeeper Molly Pritchard.
Ohio State doubled their lead in the 18th minute off of a goal from Amanda Schlueter. Brown's best chance of the first half came on a breakaway opportunity from Joy Okonye in the 23rd minute, Okonye's chance was turned away by Pritchard. Less than a minute later, Aminata Davis had a chance to cut the Ohio State lead in half, her shot was also stopped by Pritchard.
Brown had four shots in the opening 45 minutes while forcing Pritchard to make three saves. Bella Schopp made one save in the first half.
The Bears generated a number of chances in the final 45 minutes of action. Angelina Vargas had two chances a couple of minutes apart to get Brown on the board, both of Vargas' chances were stopped by Pritchard. Brown's final chance came from Kira Maguire, but Maguire's chance was stopped by Pritchard.
The Bears out shot the Buckeyes 9-4 in the second half and 13-10 through 90 minutes of play. Brown had six shots on goal while Ohio State had five. Bella Schopp made three saves in the contest while Nadja Meite had a team-high four shots.
"I think the difference when you are playing top competition like Ohio State, you have to take care of your chances when you have them because they are going to take care of theirs on the other end of the field," McNeill added. "We will get home, get some rest and get ready for Northeastern on Thursday."
Brown will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 19 when they wrap up non-conference play at Northeastern, kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
