Men's Lacrosse Grinds Out Non-Conference Win Over UMass

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (1-6, 0-1 Ivy League) defeated the UMass Minutemen (4-4, 0-0 A10) with an 11-10 victory in a Friday afternoon battle at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Spencer Hughes led the Bears with a career-high four goals and Connor Theriault finished the afternoon with 16 saves to propel the Bears to victory.
"I'm pretty proud and happy for our team and assistant coaches," said head coach Mike Daly. "They have all worked and kept grinding throughout. We have nothing but respect for UMass and that was a hard-fought game. We are happy to come away with a team win."
Matteo Corsi struck just 50 seconds into the game and assisted on Hughes' first of the game with 10:18 remaining in the first to give Brown a 2-0 lead.
UMass evened the score with goals from Conor Foley and Dillon Arrant halfway through the first quarter.
Ben Locke added his seventh goal of the season with 4:08 remaining in the first but Shane O'Leary scored with two-tenths of a second remaining in the first to even the score at 3-3.
Locke, Aidan McLane, and Hughes each added a goal early in the second quarter with a UMass goal from Grant Breyo sandwiched between to make it 6-4 Bruno with 11:34 remaining. Hughes capped the hat trick with 5:33 remaining to make it 7-4.
Hughes added his fourth goal 32 seconds into the third quarter to make it 8-5 Bears before O'Leary and McLane traded goals. Mason Bregman and O'Leary tallied the final two goals of the third quarter to make it a one-goal game at 9-8.
Charles Kurtz tied the game with 10:11 remaining in the fourth and Breyo gave UMass its first lead of the game with 8:17 remaining at 10-9.
From there, UMass faceoff specialist Caleb Hammett won the draw and scored with 8:11 on the clock. However, Daly requested a stick check on the UMass senior and Hammett was assessed a one-minute penalty and the goal was wiped off the board.
Jackson Wolfram struck with 6:55 remaining with McLane picking up the assist to even the score at 10-10 and Corsi wired a shot past UMass goalie Matt Knote (13 saves) for the game-winner.

- Brown finished the game with a 39-38 edge in shots but UMass had the shots on goal edge, 26-24.
- Dash Sachs went 12-for-23 at the faceoff X with six ground balls.
- Brown was 2-for-6 in man-up situations with McLane tallying both EMO goals. UMass was 1-for-7.
- Both teams finished the game with 31 ground balls. Brown also finished with 14 turnovers, two fewer than UMass.
