PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Villanova Wildcats (6-3, 0-0 Big East) pulled away from the Brown Bears (1-7, 0-1 Ivy League) in the fourth quarter to win the defensive battle with a 9-5 final on a blustery Monday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
"I'm disappointed for sure in the result," said head coach Mike Daly. "I thought our defense was great today but we have to put a more complete team effort together. Credit to Villanova and their coaches, they made the plays they needed to make."
Brown and Villanova traded first quarter goals and ended the frame in a 2-2 tie. Ben Locke and Matteo Corsi found the back of the net for the Bears with Colin Michener scoring twice for the Wildcats.
Michener tallied consecutive goals to cap off the hat trick to start the second quarter and give Villanova a 4-2 lead. Jackson Wolfram struck early on an extended man-up opportunity with 9:37 remaining in the half and Mason Reale recorded the final goal of the half with 3:42 remaining for a 5-3 halftime lead.
Charlie Cave scored from midfield for his first goal of the season early in the third quarter to cut into the Villanova lead and break the 10-man ride. Connor Theriault (12 saves) turned aside all four shots faced in the quarter to keep the Wildcats off the board.
Tyler Boes ended the Villanova scoreless drought with 12:43 remaining in the fourth with his eighth goal of the season to make it 6-4 Wildcats.
Dan Martin and Reale found the back of the net halfway through the fourth quarter to extend Villanova's lead to 8-4 with 4:45 remaining.
Locke cut into the lead with 4:17 remaining with his second of the game to beat Villanova goalie Anthony Wilson (11 saves). Ben Scandone assisted on the goal.
Matt Licata re-gained the four-goal lead for Villanova with his first of the game with 3:20 remaining and the final ended at 9-5.
