The two teams combined for eight home runs in the game, with three of those coming from the Bears.
Sophomore outfielder Mika Petersen had a pair of hits, including a grand slam and four RBIs, junior catcher Conor Cooke had two hits, including a home run and two RBIs, and sophomore shortstop DJ Dillehay had a big game-tying two-run homer. Junior Nathan Brasher reached base four times via three hits and a walk and scored twice. On the mound, freshman Brenden Kline tossed 2.0 solid innings of relief with two strikeouts.
Holy Cross got on the board in the top of the third inning on a one-out solo home run by Zach Wieder. Brown quickly got the run back in the bottom of the third as Crawford drew a one-out walk, Petersen beat out a bunt single, and Mark Henshon fought off an up-and-in pitch down the left field line for an RBI single to tie the game.
The Crusaders came back with six runs in the fourth, batting around with three walks and four hits, including another one-out solo home run, along with a two-run single and two-run double, both of which came with two outs, to take a 7-1 lead.
Once again, the Bears provided a quick answer and got three of the runs back. Reece Rappoli drove a single into center field, advanced on a wild pitch and came in on a double by Brasher to make it 7-2, then Cooke followed by crushing the first pitch he saw out to left-center for a two-run shot to bring the Bears within 7-4.
Holy Cross got all three back in the fifth on a pair of home runs to hold a 10-4 lead at the halfway point and added an unearned run in the sixth inning.
The Bears roared back to tie the game with a huge seven-run sixth inning, tagging three hits, two of which left the yard, and taking advantage of four walks. With the bases loaded and one out, Charles Crawford tagged an RBI single to right field, and Petersen followed by driving an 0-2 pitch down the right field line inside the pole for a grand slam, and the first home run of his career, to make it 11-9. Two batters later, Dillehay greeted the reliever by jumping on the first pitch and clubbing a two-run homer to left-center field to tie the score at 11.
Kline worked around two hits to keep the Crusaders off the board in the seventh and eighth. After a pitching change, Holy Cross retook the lead with a two-out, two-strike home run, and with darkness setting in, held on in the bottom of the ninth as the Bears left the tying run on first base.
Brown is scheduled to open up Ivy League play this Saturday with a doubleheader at defending champion Penn.
