PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Brown baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to open Ivy League play on Friday afternoon, falling to Penn 4-1 in the opener, and 6-5 in 11 innings in game two.
DJ Dillehay went 3-for-8 in the two games with two RBIs, a run, and a walk. Mark Henshon combined to go 4-for-9 with a walk and two runs scored, including three hits in the nightcap. Miles Newsome reached base three times in game two and scored twice.
GAME 1
After putting the leadoff man on base in each of the first three innings, Penn struck for all four runs in the bottom of the third on four hits and a walk to hold a 4-0 lead. Brown's offense managed just two hits and four baserunners through the first eight innings before a pair of extra base hits in the ninth helped push the team's lone run across as Henshon led off with a triple, and Logan Meusy followed two batters later with an RBI double.
On the mound, Jack Seppings went the first 6.0 innings, and Stiles Begnaud tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief with one walk and one strikeout.
GAME 2
The Quakers struck quickly in the first inning with a one-out solo home run by Davis Baker. Brown put the first two runners on via walks in the second but were unable to score.
Penn struck for two more runs in the second on a double and bases loaded walk to take a 3-0 lead before the Bears go on the board in the third. Mika Petersen led off the inning with a double down the left field line and came in to score two batters later on a ground ball by Dillehay.'
Brown used single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to draw even at three. After a one out triple by Henshon in the fifth, Dillehay once again came through at the plate, driving a single to left field to pull Brown within one. Newsome led off the sixth inning with a single to center field, then came home two batters later on a sac fly to center field by Conor Cooke. The Bears would load the bases in the inning with two outs but were unable to score, leaving the game tied.
Penn used a leadoff walk and RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning to retake the lead 4-3, but Brown answered right back in the seventh to retie the game. Brady Dever led off the seventh with a double, then Meusy pinch ran and stole third. He came in to score on a big two-out single by Nathan Brasher to tie the game 4-4.
The Quakers scored again in the bottom of the eighth, but the Bears rallied to tie the game once more in the ninth. With two outs and a man on second, Cooke lined one into center field that was misplayed by the centerfielder and rolled to the wall, allowing the tying run to score on the error that sent the game into extra innings.
Penn walked it off in the bottom of the 11th with a single, walk and RBI single to start the inning.
The Bears and Quakers will close out their three-game series on Sunday with the first pitch set for noon.
