Women’s Basketball Hangs Tough in Loss at No. 25 Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Brown women's basketball team hung tough against a nationally ranked No. 25 Princeton squad, but ultimately fell by a score of 76-63 on the road on Saturday evening.
Freshman guard Olivia Young went 6-for-12 from the floor and netted career-highs of 16 points and four three-pointers, to go with three rebounds, two blocks, and one steal. Sophomore Grace Arnolie led all scorers with 19 points and added a career-high seven assists. Senior Kyla Jones added nine points.
Junior Isabella Mauricio scored nine points and connected on a trio of three-pointers, which moved her past Colleen Kelly '06 and into sole possession of fifth place on the program's career three-point list with 171.
Brown committed 17 turnovers to Princeton's eight, while the Tigers held a 25-11 advantage in points off turnovers and 21-5 in second chance points. The Tigers outrebounded Brown 41-26, including 19-6 on the offensive glass. Brown shot 43.1 percent from the floor in the game and 47.8 percent from beyond the arc. Princeton outscored the Bears 44-20 in the paint.
Mauricio's second triple of the opening quarter pulled Brown within 12-10 with just under four minutes to go. The Tigers then used an 8-1 run to open up a 20-11 lead with under a minute to go, forcing a Brown timeout. Princeton led 20-11 after one quarter, with 10 of their points coming off six Brown turnovers.
Young hit a jumper at 7:05 to end a 17-2 Princeton run. Arnolie and Young followed on the next two processions with back-to-back threes to make it eight straight points and pull the Bears within 29-20 at the 5:52 mark. Princeton took a game-high 17-point lead in the closing seconds of the half. Mauricio then connected on a three-pointer from straight away to trim it to 40-26 at the break, a basket that moved her past Kelly and into fifth on the program's all-time list.
Princeton built the lead back to 17 points in the third quarter before Arnolie hit her third three of the game with 2:21 to play to cut it to 55-41.
Brown got the deficit down to 11 with 8:15 to go in the fourth following a pair of free throws from Arnolie. The Bears trimmed the lead to 11 once again with 5:34 to go on Young's fourth three of the game to make it 65-54. The deficit would get no larger than 14 the rest of the way as both teams answered each other down the stretch as the Tigers handled Brown their second straight loss.
Brown will return to the court next Friday, February 9 at 7 p.m. with a trip to Columbia.
