PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Kyla Jones scored her 1,000th career point and hit the game-winning shot with 1.5 seconds left to lead the Brown women's basketball team to a huge 61-59 win over Penn on Saturday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The victory moves Brown into sole possession of fourth place in the Ivy League standings, one game ahead of the Quakers with four games remaining, putting Brown in the driver's seat for the final spot in the upcoming Ivy Madness tournament.
Jones became the 23rd player in program history to eclipse 1,000 career points on a layup just under two minutes into the game. Trailing 57-51 with just under three minutes remaining, Brown ended the game on a 10-2 run and connected on five of its final seven field goals. Jones shot 11-for-21 on the night, including hitting six of her final seven shots from the floor and scored 12 of her game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter.
Freshman Olivia Young totaled 13 points, three rebounds and three steals, while sophomore Ada Anamekwe had nine points and nine rebounds. Bruno continued its string of strong shooting performances by going 27-for-61 (44.3 percent) from the field.
Penn jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the opening minutes before the Bears used a 7-0 run to take a 12-11 lead at the 2:35 mark.
Penn led 21-18 after one quarter of play and kept the lead throughout the second quarter, with the Bears pulling within 23-22 at the 6:02 mark and Jones adding a layup to pull Brown within 28-24 going into halftime.
Young's stolen pass led to a breakaway layup for Jones off the Anamekwe assist that put the Bears on top for the first time in the second half, 43-42 with 1:59 to go in the third quarter. A key defensive stop as time expired preserved the one-point edge heading to the fourth. Overall, Brown ended the quarter on a 5-0 run and scored nine of the last 11 points.
Penn retook the lead early in the fourth quarter and built to as much as six on two occasions. An 8-0 run for Brown put the Bears up 59-57 after a Jones bucket with 16 seconds left. Penn quickly went down the floor and tied the score with six seconds remaining. After a Brown timeout advanced the ball, Jones took a pass on the three-point line, drove down the lane, spun and put the layup in over the defender with 1.5 seconds left for the winning shot. Penn's desperation three from well beyond half court as time expired nearly connected, but rattled around and out.
Brown will return to action with one game next Saturday, February 24 at Harvard. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
