Men's Hockey's Comeback Bid Comes Up Short at Northeastern
12/7/2024 10:41:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
BOSTON, Mass. – A valiant comeback effort came up just short as the Brown Bears (3-4-2, 2-3-1 ECAC) suffered a 4-3 loss against the Northeastern Huskies (4-7-3, 1-5-3 HEA) Saturday night at Matthews Arena.
Brian Nicholas led the charge in the three-goal third period with two goals and an assist.
"We found a way to make it a one-goal game; Northeastern is a good team, they're record is irrelevant at this time," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "They've played the toughest schedule in the country, Hockey East is a very good league, and they have one of the top offensive lines I've seen in a long time.
"We didn't have a great second; we had a good third, but it was a little too late. We just need to grow from it, learn from it, and understand the consistency that it takes to be a team that can win championships. We're close, but we have to use this as a growth moment. A little more consistency in that game would have gone a long way."
Northeastern opened the scoring 19 seconds into the first period as Vinny Borgesi found the back of the net for his second goal of the season. Jack Williams and Dylan Hryckowian picked up the assists on the goal.
The Bears responded through the rest of the first and finished the period with a 15-11 edge in shots on goal.
Northeastern made it 2-0 less than six minutes into the second period as Jack Dorrington wired a shot off a Husky faceoff win to beat goaltender Lawton Zacher (30 saves).
With 5:39 remaining in the second, Jack Williams scored on the power play to push Northeastern's lead to 3-0.
Cam Lund extended Northeastern's lead 4:02 into the third period with assists going to Borgesi and Jake Boltmann.
The Bears struck for two power play goals in less than a minute to cut the Husky lead in half with 10:42 remaining in the third.
Nicholas extended his point streak to five games with his third goal of the season 8:21 into the third, wiring a shot past Cameron Whitehead (22 saves) with assists going to Alex Pineau and Ryan St. Louis.
Pineau cleaned up a Nicholas rebound 57 seconds later to cut the lead to two goals. St. Louis added the secondary assist on the goal for his second point of the night.
Nicholas cut the Northeastern lead to one with 8:07 remaining in the game. The freshman picked up a pass from Leo Schwartz and rifled a shot that trickled through Whitehead.
The Bears were unable to find the equalizer in the final minutes of the third as the Huskies escaped with a 4-3 win.
"The first half is done, we had some good moments, and we have a little break now," Whittet added." There are a lot of things we need to work on, the good news is I think a lot of guys will get healthy, we've been a little short throughout the season with some key injuries."
