Men's Hockey Blanks LIU for Non-Conference Win
12/29/2024 5:15:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Lawton Zacher turned aside all 43 shots faced for his second shutout of the season as the Brown Bears (4-4-2, 2-3-1 ECAC) closed out the calendar year with a 3-0 home win over the LIU Sharks (10-7-1, Independent) on Sunday.
"The games after an extended break with exams and the holidays are always interesting," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "I didn't think we were perfect tonight, but the sign of a maturing team is ultimately finding a way to win.
"Really good goaltending from Zacher, he's been incredibly consistent. And I thought we defended fairly hard, and we found a way to get a win. That's sports, you win, or you lose, and we won. It wasn't perfect and we'll be better next weekend. But coming out of break, I thought the guys battled pretty hard against a really good LIU team. For us, that's a good win, a big win, and it sets us up for this coming weekend in league which are hugely important games. I'm proud of the guys."
Brown struck for the afternoon's first goal 15:40 into the first period as Ryan St. Louis redirected a shot from Max Scott through LIU goaltender Ty Outen (17 saves) for his first goal of the season.
Early in the second period, Zacher turned aside a breakaway effort from Anthony Lucarelli to keep the Sharks off the board.
Halfway through the second period, St. Louis found Scott alone in the slot for a quick strike goal and 2-0 lead. Tony Andreozzi added the secondary assist on the goal.
With Outen pulled for the extra attacker, Ryan Shostak collected a pass from Brendan Clark and found the net to seal the victory with 46 seconds remaining. Brian Nicholas picked up the secondary assist.
