POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Brown Bears (5-21-2, 4-14-2 ECAC) scored with a minute remaining in regulation to force overtime, but the Clarkson Golden Knights (14-15-3, 8-9-3 ECAC) prevailed in the extra period to take a 4-3 win Saturday at Cheel Arena.
The Bears picked up a league point with the result.
"I thought the guys played hard for long stretches of that game and played the right way for most of that game," interim head coach Jason Smith said. "I give them a lot of credit for battling back on the road against a good Clarkson team to give ourselves a chance to win at the end.
"The bounces didn't go how we wanted at the end, but again, I give the guys a ton of credit for coming back and getting the point on the road. Especially after last night, it's important to get points on the road. I'm proud of them for playing the right way for long stretches of that game. Unfortunately, you're not always rewarded by that, but I'm proud of how the guys played and how hard they battled."
The Bears jumped to an early lead 7:59 into the first period with a shorthanded breakaway goal from Ryan St. Louis. The captain beat a Clarkson defenseman to the loose puck in the neutral zone and beat goaltender Shane Soderwall (24 saves) for his eighth goal of the season.
The Golden Knights tied the game less than three minutes later as Jace Letourneau found the back of the net shortly after a Clarkson 5-on-3 advantage ended. Luka Sukovic and Matthew Mayich assisted.
Ivan Zadvernyuk recorded his eighth goal of the campaign with 1:04 remaining in the opening period. Soderwall made the initial save on a shot from Ben Poitras, but Zadvernyuk batted the rebound out of the air for the goal.
Tyler Shea (24 saves) turned aside a breakaway effort from Mael St-Denis early in the second period to keep the Bears up a goal.
Jared Mangan evened the score 6:21 into the second period and beat Shea with his seventh goal of the season.
Clarkson took the lead 13:15 into the second with a power play goal from Justin Cote, who wired a feed from Tate Taylor in the slot for his eighth goal of the season.
With Shea pulled for the extra attacker, Brian Nicholas blasted a one-timer off a feed from Zadvernyuk to tie the game with a minute remaining. Poitras added the secondary assist on the goal.
Tristan Sarsland scored 2:19 into the overtime period to give the Golden Knights a 4-3 win.
