CANTON, N.Y. – The Brown Bears (5-20-2, 4-13-2 ECAC) drew even with the St. Lawrence Saints (6-22-3, 5-13-1 ECAC) early in the third period, but the home Saints tallied the final two goals to take a 3-1 win Friday night at Appleton Arena.
"I thought the guys played well for long portions of that game," interim head coach Jason Smith said. "I didn't think we were consistent enough, and I told the group that I didn't think we executed well. We had plenty of chances, we just didn't execute. There are a lot of good things that we can build off for tomorrow; we just have to do that stuff more consistently."
Brown and St. Lawrence skated to a scoreless opening period with chances at both ends of the ice. Tyler Shea (31 saves) made the stop of the period in the final minutes, moving to his right to rob Filip Juricek of a goal.
With the game still scoreless late in the second period, St. Lawrence goaltender Cameron Smith (31 saves) turned aside a pair of power play chances from Ben Poitras to keep the Bears off the board.
Rasmus Svartstrom broke the deadlock with 4:04 remaining in the second period with his 15th goal of the season. Tyler Cristall and Cayden Casey picked up the assists on the goal.
Brian Nicholas tied the game 1:28 into the third period with his fourth goal of the season on the power play. Ben Poitras moved the puck to Ryan St. Louis below the goal line, who found Nicholas at the dot for the quick shot goal.
Sam LeDrew broke the deadlock with 6:41 remaining in the third period with his seventh goal of the season. LeDrew blasted an off angle shot to beat Shea with Gabe Westling and Jake Lammens picking up the assists.
The Saints added an empty net goal with 2:07 remaining to push the score to 3-1.
