Women’s Basketball Dominates in 70-43 Win Over New Hampshire

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Brown women's basketball team (6-6) handed the New Hampshire Wildcats (5-7) their seventh loss of the season, and third loss in a row on Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
"I thought the team came out today with great intensity. A couple of people mentioned that this was our first game in a pretty long stretch, and right at the tail end of their exams. I know sometimes those games can sometimes be 'Is your team a little rusty?' or 'How are we feeling?' said Elizabeth F. Turner '98 Coaching Chair for Women's Basketball Monique LeBlanc. "I want to say this team had tremendous intensity and focus, and played at a really high level all week during the exam break, so I knew that they would come out and play with that great intensity that we needed tonight."
Junior guard Grace Arnolie led the Bears in scoring with 21 points against the Wildcats. This marks Arnolie's fifth consecutive double-figure game of the season.
First-year guard Gia Powell followed Arnolie with 20 points against New Hampshire.
Junior forward Alyssa Moreland made her first start of the season. Moreland posted five points, 11 rebounds, and five steals.
Moreland struck first for the Bears, making her presence felt from tip-off. Brown went on a nine point run at the end of the first quarter, holding the 19-10 advantage over the Wildcats to end the quarter.
Brown was consistent with their scoring trend throughout the second quarter, posting 15 points ahead of the break. First year guard Gia Powell hit three triples in the second quarter, netting nine of the Bears' 15 points. Arnolie, senior guard Isabella Mauricio, and Moreland posted the remaining points. The Bears remained in control of the game leading 34-19 at the half.
The Bears continued to dominate in the third quarter, posting another 19 points to New Hampshire's nine. Sophomore guard Olivia Young returned to her three point scoring around six minutes into the quarter, giving the Bears a 20 point advantage over the Wildcats. Arnolie, Mauricio, and Powell tacked on nine more points for Brown, rounding out the quarter 53-28.
New Hampshire made a final rally in the fourth quarter posting a game-high 15 points, but were unable to even out the score. Brown earned their sixth win of the season, and improved to a 6-6 record.
