Men's Hockey Drops Opener at Colgate, 5-3

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Colgate Raiders (4-4-1, 1-0-0 ECAC) handing the Brown Bears (0-1-0, 0-1-0 ECAC) a season-opening 5-3 loss at Class of 1965 Arena in Hamilton on Friday night.
"We got better as the game went on," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We have lots of young talent who were playing in their first college hockey game. The pace and compete-level needed at this level are learned and only gained through growth moments in actual games.
"This being our first game and Colgate's ninth definitively played a part in the game. We will learn and continue to improve. I really like our talent this year and feel that this is a special group."
With six Bears making their collegiate debut and one making his Division I debut, Colgate jumped to a 2-0 lead with goals from Alex DiPaolo and Max Nagel less than two minutes apart late in the first period. The DiPaolo goal came on the power play.
Alex Pineau cut into the Raider lead with Brown's first goal of the season with two minutes remaining in the opening frame on the power play. Pineau wired a blue line shot off a feed from Brian Nicholas to beat Colgate goaltender Andrew Takacs (21 saves). Ivan Zadvernyuk picked up the secondary assist on the goal.
The Raiders regained a two-goal lead 6:53 into the second period as Niko Rexine finished a backdoor feed from Tommy Bergsland to beat Brown goaltender Lawton Zacher (25 saves).
Zadvernyuk struck for his first collegiate goal halfway through the second period just moments after a Brown power play expired. Takacs made the initial save on Ethan Mistry's shot, but Zadvernyuk was there for the rebound to bring the Bears within a goal. Brett Bliss picked up the secondary assist on the goal.
Colgate went back ahead by two goals as Jake Schneider struck for a short handed goal with 6:10 remaining in the middle frame.
Ryan Shostak buried a goal from the neutral zone 2:54 into the third period to make it 4-3 Raiders. Andrew King forced a Raider turnover and Shostak's entry into the zone tripped up Takacs.
As Brown pressed for the equalizer, Antonio Fernandez made it 5-3 Raiders with 7:17 remaining in the third.
The Bears pulled Zacher with 3:15 remaining in the third in an effort to find two goals, but were unable to draw even with the Raiders.
