ITHACA, N.Y. – Two goals in the final minute of a tied game dashed Brown's upset bid as the sixth-ranked Cornell Big Red (3-0-1, 1-0-1) took a 3-1 win over the Bears (0-2-0, 0-2-0 ECAC) Saturday night at Lynah Rink.
"We played the game at a high-level tonight," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We competed and battled one of the best teams in the country in one of the toughest environments in college hockey all game.
"The positive is if we play at that compete-level we will be successful. This is a hard one as we played well enough to win."
In a back-and-forth first period, both teams killed off an early penalty after minors were assessed to Brown's Brian Nicholas and Cornell's Hoyt Stanley.
With 1:22 remaining in the period, captain Max Scott cleaned up a Ryan St. Louis rebound to beat Big Red goaltender Ian Shane (17 saves) and give the Bears a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission. Tyler Kopff added the secondary assist on the goal.
St. Louis nearly doubled Brown's lead on the opening shift of the second, but Shane made a terrific save to keep the puck from crossing the goal line.
The Bears killed off Cornell's second power play chance of the night early in the second with Brown goaltender Tyler Shea making multiple strong saves to preserve the lead.
Dalton Bancroft evened the score eight minutes into the second period, wiring a second effort shot to beat Shea (28 saves) after his initial shot was blocked by the defense.
The Big Red killed off Brown's second power play chance of the night later in the period and the teams went to the third period tied at 1-1.
The Bears killed off a Cornell power play early in the third period after Brian Nicholas was penalized for a faceoff violation.
Kopff made a diving stop to break up a pass on a Cornell odd-man rush halfway through the third period to keep the game level at 1-1.
Bancroft broke the deadlock with his second of the night with 53 seconds remaining in the third off a pass from Ben Robertson.
Ryan Walsh added an empty net goal for the Big Red before the final buzzer to push the score to 3-1.
