PROVIDENCE. R.I. – The Brown football team came up on the short end of a 38-28 loss to Penn at Richard Gouse Field at Brown Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Bears were unable to overcome a slow start to the game, as well as some penalties and early miscues on special teams.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Brown outgained Penn 441-419, including 293-247 through the air.
The Bears were 2-for-2 on fourth downs, but just 4-for-13 on third down, while Penn converted at a 50 percent clip (6-for-12) on third downs.
Senior linebacker John Perdue had a standout performance for the Bears, tallying a career-best 11.0 tackles (10 solo), including 3.0 tackles for loss and his first career sack, which resulted in a fourth quarter safety.
Senior Tim Malo also had a career-high with 9.0 tackles (7 solo), with 1.0 TFL.
Senior Nate Lussier had a career-high 5.0 tackles, including 2.0 TFLs.
Wide receiver Mark Mahoney had seven catches for 85 yards and a touchdown to lead the offense.
Stockton Owen tallied 59 yards on the ground, while Matt Childs added 48 yards rushing and one touchdown.
Solomon Miller caught four passes for 49 yards and a touchdown.
Qwentin Brown added his seventh rushing touchdown of the season.
Quarterback Jake Willcox was 24-for-34 for 260 yards passing with two touchdowns. He also added 26 yards rushing and caught one pass for 33 yards.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After missing an early 42-yard field goal, Penn got on the board first at 2:04 of the opening quarter on a 10-yard pass from Liam O'Brien to Jared Richardson to cap a 67-yard drive.
The Bears drew even at 9:22 of the second quarter on a 31-yard pass from Willcox to Mahoney, who outjumped the defender in the right side of the end zone.
After Penn special teams came away with a blocked punt at the Brown 25, the Quakers found the end zone just two plays later on a 25-yard run by Malachi Hosley at 5:05.
Penn struck again near the end of the half on a 10-yard QB run up the middle with 26 seconds left, capping a 70-yard drive to take a 21-7 lead into the locker room.
Penn took the second half kickoff and marched 72 yards on five plays before an 11-yard touchdown run by Hosley on a direct snap for the 28-7 lead.
The Bears came right back with a touchdown of their own on a one-yard run by Qwentin Brown on 3rd-and-goal. The 11-play drive was highlighted by a 33-yard pass from Will Jarvis to Jake Willcox that set up 1st-and-goal.
Penn tacked on a field goal at 3:55 of the third to push the lead to 31-14.
After Penn tacked on another touchdown to go up 38-14, Childs ran one in from a yard out to get the Bears within 38-20 after a failed two-point conversion.
Moments later after pinning the Quakers deep, John Perdue got a big sack in the end zone for a safety with 7:37 left to bring Brown within 38-22.
Neither team was able to drive past the opponent's 35-yard line over the final three possessions.
