PROVIDENCE, R.I. - First half goals freshmen Ayla Sahin and Nadja Meite were the difference as the Brown women's soccer team picked up a 2-0 win over Yale at Stevenson-Pincince Field on Wednesday evening.
"Today was a great response and bounce back win to get back on track," head coach Kia McNeill said. "I thought we played very well especially in the first half and created a lot of quality chances on goal. I think we could have even put a couple more chances away when we had them on their heels in the first half, and I think that is an area we can continue to grow on going forward."
Ayla Sahin got the Bears on the board in the 21st minute, classmate Ella Weil stole the ball at midfield from a Yale defender and sent Sahin on a breakaway as Sahin was able to find the back of the net.
Seven minutes later, Ella Weil won the ball back for the Bears and found Joy Okonye. Okonye dribbled the ball into the 18-yard box, Okonye found Meite and Meite was able to find the back of the net to double the Brown advantage.
In the first half, the Bears out shot the Bulldogs 12-1, Bella Schopp stopped Yale's lone opportunity. Brown also generated five corner kick opportunities in the opening 45 minutes while holding Yale to zero.
Yale applied pressure in the second half as they were unable to convert, Bella Schopp made four saves in the second half for the Bears, the junior recorded her fourth shutout of the season while recording five saves. The Bears out shot the Bulldogs 15-7 (9-5) in the contest.
"We have a much deserved day off tomorrow," McNeill added. "Then we will get back on the field to get ready for Penn this weekend."
Brown will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 13 when they travel to Penn, kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
