PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown football team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon, falling 42-35 to Bryant at Richard Gouse Field at Brown Stadium. In a game that saw seven lead changes and three ties, Bryant won the game with a fourth down, 30-yard touchdown pass with 1:45 remaining, before getting a stop on downs.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Bryant outgained Brown 517-462 in total offensive yards.
Freshman Matt Childs was the Bears' leading rusher and receiver, netting 58 yards on the ground on eight carries and a touchdown, and added five catches for 93 yards and a score.
Junior Qwentin Brown rushed for three touchdowns, the first scores of his collegiate career.
Fifth-year quarterback Jake Willcox was 21-for-38 for 294 yards and a touchdown, and also rushed for 32 yards.
Bryant was 3-for-3 on fourth downs, two of which resulted in touchdown passes of 31 and 30 yards.
Junior Chason Barber tallied three catches for a career-high 70 yards.
Junior Sam Smith had a game and career-high 12 tackles (7 solo).

HOW IT HAPPENED

Bryant went down the field and scored on their opening drive on a 32-yard pass on 4th-and-20 to take an early 7-0 lead at 9:10.
Brown evened up the score with 3:01 to play in the first quarter when Qwentin Brown took the direct snap and ran it around the left side, capping a 10-play, 52-yard drive.
Qwentin Brown picked up his second one-yard scoring run in as many drives when he plowed one in with 12:30 remaining until halftime to give the Bears their first lead, 14-7. The score came after the Bears faced a 1st-and-goal from the 20.
Bryant drew even on its ensuing drive, scoring on an 18-yard pass with 8:55 left in the quarter, capping a 75-yard drive.
Bryant tacked on a pair of field goals in the final two minutes of the half to hold a 20-14 lead going into the locker room.
The Bears broke through to retake the lead on Brown's third touchdown of the afternoon on another one yard run at the 4:54 mark. The score capped a 93-yard drive and was set up by a big 44-yard completion to Barber at the one-yard line.
After Bryant retook the lead with a touchdown early in the fourth, Childs supplied the answer by bursting for a 58-yard touchdown catch-and-run to spot Brown a 28-27 lead.
Bryant answered back in less than two minutes with a touchdown and two-point conversion to take a 35-28 lead, but Childs helped Brown answer with a 15-yard touchdown run with 4:37 remaining to retie the game at 35.
Bryant got the ball back with 4:29 to go and just after the two-minute timeout, completed the 69-yard drive by converting a 30-yard touchdown pass on 4th-and-4 for the winning strike.

UP NEXT
The Bears will hit the road for two straight games, starting next Saturday, October 12 at URI in the annual battle for the Governor's Cup. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Meade Stadium in Kingston.
