Brown Bears Football Report: Episode 4
OPENING KICKOFF
- Brown and URI will meet for the 108th time in program history on Saturday, and for the 42nd time since the formation of the Governor's Cup, which was first presented in 1981.
- URI used a late stop to hold off the Bears 34-30 last season in Providence.
- Last year's game saw eight lead changes, including six in the first half.
- URI is ranked No. 19 in this week's Stats Perform FCS Poll and No. 21 in the AFCA FCS Coaches Poll.
SERIES HISTORY
- Brown leads the all-time series 73-32-2, with Rhody leading 22-19 since the first Governor's Cup in 1981. URI has won five in a row and six of the last seven games in the series.
- The five game-winning streak for URI is tied for their longest such streak in series history (1988-93), which dates back to 1909.
- Brown is seeking its first 3-1 start since the 2013 season.
BEFORE THE GOVERNOR'S CUP
- For many years, the annual William T. Broomhead '35 Trophy was presented annually to the winner of the Brown-URI football game. The trophy mysteriously vanished in the 1970s and was ultimately replaced by the Governor's Cup in 1981.
WEEKLY HONORS
- Running back Matt Childs has been named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week the last two weeks. Last week against Bryant, he led the team in both rushing (58) and receiving (93) yards with two touchdowns. On Sept. 28 against Harvard, he posted 101 receiving yards on four catches including a 75-yard score and rushed for 14 yards on four carries.
FIGHTING TIL THE END
- Brown's last-minute rally over Harvard is the latest in a line of comeback victories over the last two seasons, marking the fourth time in the last six wins Brown came from behind in the fourth quarter.
- Brown has scored in the final minute to win three times in the last two seasons (2024-Harvard; 2023- Bryant and Princeton).
QUICK STRIKES
- Four of Brown's 12 touchdowns this season have come on plays of at least 45 yards or more, including an 87-yard pass to Solomon Miller on the first play of the season, and a 75-yarder to Matt Childs.
GENERATING TURNOVERS
- Brown's average turnover margin per game in 2024 is +1.00, good for first in the Ivy League and t-10th in the nation.
SACK ATTACK
- Brown ranks third in the Ivy League with six sacks through three games.
- On the flip side, Brown is tied with Princeton by allowing 10 sacks this season, tied for 114th-nationally.
SECOND(ARY) TO NONE
- Brown is tied with Columbia for the Ivy League lead with three interceptions so far this season.
- Brown compiled nine pass breakups on Sept. 21 at Georgetown.
SMITH'S CAREER DAYS
- Junior linebacker Sam Smith has set new career-highs in tackles the last three games.
- He registered 6.0 stops against Georgetown and 7.0 against Harvard, then led the team with 13.0 against Bryant.
