Women's Soccer Battles to Scoreless Draw with Portland
9/14/2023 9:53:00 PM | Women's Soccer
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's soccer team battled to a scoreless draw with Portland Thursday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field. It marks the first game against an Ivy League team in Portland's history that they did not win, going 5-0 in its previous matchups with Ivy foes.
"Today was a hard-fought game between two quality teams," head coach Kia McNeill said. "I thought we did really well defensively neutralizing their forwards and dealing with their service in the run of play and on set pieces. We didn't give up any shots on goal which is great too. I think we could have generated a bit more in the final third and that is going to be our focus heading into the weekend game versus URI."
The Bears (3-1-2) held the Pilots (4-1-2) to their lowest shot total of the season, outshooting the visitors 9-4, and preventing them from putting a single shot on goal.
Brown had its chances to put one in the back of the net, but just wasn't able to finish one off.
Brittany Raphino put one on frame in just the fourth minute of action that the Portland netminder was able to stop.
The best chance of the night came in the 29th minute when Ava Seelenfreund was able to cut her way through the center of the Pilots' defense and got a hard shot off from just inside the box. It looked destined to be the opening goal, but Bre Norris made another nice play in goal for Portland top keep the Bears off the board.
Kira Maguire put Brown's final shot on goal in the 62nd minute from outside the 18, but it was again scooped up by Norris.
Clare Gagne didn't have to make a save on the night, but her work with the Bears' back line was what helped stifle Portland's attack.
Brown will play their final nonconference game of the regular season this Sunday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m. when they take on Rhode Island at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
