Late Goal Lifts Women's Soccer to Victory Over Rhode Island
9/17/2023 4:52:00 PM | Women's Soccer
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A goal by Miya Grant-Clavijo in the 81st minute lifted the Brown women's soccer team over Rhode Island 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
The play started off a long cross into the box from the left side of the field by Sheyenne Allen. Joy Okonye controlled it and found Brittany Raphino in the middle of the 18. Raphino fed a great pass diagonally through the right side of the defense to Grant-Clavijo. The junior's initial shot was cleared off the line by a Ram defender, but she collected her own rebound and found the back of the net on her second attempt for the eventual game-winner.
"The game wasn't pretty but we got the result," head coach Kia McNeill said. "It's good that we got another shutout and only allowed one shot on goal, but we need to be better in possession and with our decision-making on the ball. There were too many unforced errors in our build up and those are going to hurt us if we don't focus to minimize that. I don't think today was our best performance by any stretch, but it's great that we have a full week of training to get ready for Ivy play next week."
The Bears (4-1-2) controlled the majority of the game, outshooting the Rams (0-5-4) 21-7, including a 12-1 edge in shots on goal. They also earned seven corners to URI's four.
Six of Brown's 12 looks on goal came in the first half, but the Rams' Faith Hutchins was up to the task, stopping all six. Raphino was responsible for three of those six shots on goal during the first 45, including a couple one-on-on chances, but Hutchins was continuously in the right place at the right time.
In the second half, the Bears continued to press, putting four more shots on goal before Grant-Clavijo was finally able to find the back of the net.
Clare Gagne stopped the only shot on goal she faced on the day in net for the Bears.
Brown will now turn its attention to Ivy League play. The Bears will travel to Harvard next Saturday, Sept. 23 for a 7 p.m. matchup as they begin their quest to defend their Ivy crown, one they have maintained for the last three seasons.
