PRINCETON, N.J. – A strong seven-inning start in game one from junior Paxton Meyers helped the Brown baseball team to 6-3 victory in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Princeton. The Bears took a one run lead into the bottom of the ninth in game two before Princeton rallied for the walk-off 6-5 to earn the split.
Meyers turned in a dominant seven-inning start with seven strikeouts in the opener, allowing just two hits and three earned runs to earn his second win of the year. Sophomore Conor Cooke tagged two extra base hits, including his first career home run in game one. Senior Ray Sass went 3-for-6 with a walk, two RBIs and three runs scored in the doubleheader, and classmate Derian Morphew added three hits, including a pair of doubles and two runs scored.
Eight of Brown's nine starters reached base in both games, with eight picking up hits in game one and seven earning hits in game two.
Game two starter Santhosh Gottam turned in a quality six-inning outing while allowing three runs on six hits and just two walks and four strikeouts. Freshman Christian Keel fired a scoreless inning of relief in game two. Senior Bobby Olsen picked up the save with two scoreless innings in game one.
GAME ONE
Brown struck for a run in the top of the second to take the early lead when Cooke doubled to right-center with one out, then came in on a single by Sass. Princeton answered right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead on a pair of walks and a two-run single.
Brown tacked on single runs in both the third and fourth innings to retake the lead. In the third, Ryan Marra led off with a walk and came in to score on a two-out single by DJ Dillehay. In the fourth, Sass drew a walk with one out and one batter later, Nathan Brasher drove a triple to deep right center field to score Sass with the go-ahead run.
After a bumpy second inning, Meyers settled in beautifully and dominated the rest of the way, retiring 17 of the final 18 batters he faced, with the only blemish coming on a two-out solo home run by Caden Shapiro in the fourth that tied the game 3-3. From there, he set down 10 in a row to finish his outing.
Brown took the lead for good with two runs in the sixth, starting on a one-out solo homer by Cooke to left field. Sass followed with a hit-by-pitch and came in the score on an error following a hit by Marra to push the lead to 5-3. Brown tacked on an insurance run in the seventh after a leadoff double by Morphew and scored one batter later on a single by Mika Petersen.
Olsen worked around a walk and a hit over 2.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts to earn his first career save.
GAME TWO
Brown threatened with two in scoring position with nobody out in the first and loaded the bases with nobody out in the second inning, but didn't score in either frame.
Princeton broke the stalemate with three runs in the fourth inning courtesy of a single and RBI double, followed by the league-record 20th home run of the season by Kyle Vinci.
After dancing out of trouble in each of the first two innings, Princeton starter Jackson Emus retired 17 of the last 18 batters he faced, with his only blemish coming on a fifth inning walk.
Facing the Princeton bullpen in the eighth, Brown sent 10 men to the plate and exploded for five-run on five hits to rally and take the lead, with four of the runs coming with two outs. Morphew led off with a double, Petersen followed with a single, and Dillehay plated Morphew with a sac fly to get Brown on the board. With two outs, Sass singled up the middle to score Petersen, and Brasher followed with an RBI single to right field, with another run scoring on a throwing error to put the Bears in front 4-3. After a walk by Marra, Mark Henshon stepped up and singled to center field to plate Brasher and push the edge to 5-3.
Princeton used a leadoff double and a sac fly to pull within one in the bottom of the eighth. After Brown stranded a runner on third in the top of the ninth, Princeton walked it off in the bottom of the inning courtesy of a two-out single and a game-winning homer from Matt Scannell.
Overall in the game, Brown stranded nine men on base, including seven in scoring position.
Brown will go for the series win in the rubber match of the three-game series tomorrow's season finale. First pitch is scheduled for noon on ESPN+.
